An eight-member delegation of Pakistan's Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) visited Turkey last week in order to learn in more detail about Turkish religious education, particularly the status of imam-hatip schools, where an Islamic education is provided in addition to science, culture and the arts.
The delegation included Chairman Senator Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani, CII members Dr. Mohammad Idrees Soomro, Muhammad Sadeeq Hazarvi Saeedi, Allama Syed Iftikhar Hussain Al-Naqvi Al-Najafi, Professor Sabiha Qadri and Qari Muhammad Hanif Jallandhary, and CII Director General Muhammad Ilyas Khan.
The delegation visited the Religious Affairs Directorate and met with its head, Mehmet Gormez, who offered to open a model imam-hatip high school in Pakistan. Sherani welcomed the offer and said Pakistan will study the proposal and will discuss further modalities to give concrete shape to the pilot project. We take pride in Turkey's economic development and welcome Turkish assistance for further improving our religious education, said Sherani.
In order to observe the teaching model of the imam-hatip schools, the delegation visited Tevfiq Ileri Imam-Hatip High School in Ankara and Darüşşafaka International Imam-Hatip High School in İstanbul and had a briefing from school administration.
To understand Turkish religious education in detail, the delegation also visited the General Directorate of Religious Education, İlahiyat faculties at Ankara University and Marmara University in İstanbul and called on the muftis of Ankara and İstanbul.
