We can come up with many ways to renegotiate the debt, but the floods come every 3-5 years. Why not get the useless politicians to build a few more dams. Maybe 4 large and 10-15 smaller dams will bring less havoc in the next flooding. That is an area that Pakistan needs to focus on the short, medium and long term.

This is the best opportunity to get some long term loans for hydel projects on low interest rates from the lending institutions. As muslims we do not want to default on loans because in the Hadees by the Prophet Mohammad it states that people that default of money owed to others will be made to eat balls of fire for the money they owe in hell.

Default won't help Pakistan in either the long- or short-run. And the financial games should wait. Flood relief is needed now. Relief accounting can wait. You need to supply refugees with 10,000 tons a day. Two hundred fifty tractor-trailers' worth every day. Doesn't anybody else grasp the magnitude of these statistics?

There are enough politicians in Islamabad to work on both issues simultaneously.

The Finance ministry and the FBR are not directly involved in relief efforts in any case - the GoP needs to multitask and prepare for the next stage along with dealing with the immediate relief efforts. If one is at the expense of the other, than it only speaks to yet more incompetency.

Yes, but dam the Indus? It's probably better to re-settle people away from the river and turn millions of acres into public parkland.

How is that going to affect people who are so cynical, corrupt, or hungry that they are convinced they are going to hell anyway?
