ISLAMABAD: Pakistan would soon award India with the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to further promote trade between the two neighboring countries, Senior Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Fahim said that the decision to award India the MFN status has already been taken, and that it will soon be implemented.

The senior minister said that the government was determined to protect the interests of the local industries, adding that all reservations of the local trade and industrial sector need to be addressed before implementation of the decision.

Fahim said that under the Strategic Trade Policy Framework 2012-15, the target for trade with India was set at US$ 1.5 billion, which currently stood at only US$ 300 million.

The minister said that exports from the country during the first six months of the current financial year grew by 8 per cent, which was a positive sign for Pakistan’s economic development.

Will Pakistan open its FMCG, Automobile market for India ?

I dont think so .
Initially the trade will be of raw materials , cement , vegetables and fruits etc but their is indeed a possibility of Pakistan allowing Indian automobiles in the future .

Lahoris are lucky... The day MFN is awarded, real estate prices there will skyrocket to unprecedented heights.

How :woot: ??
I know Lahore is close to the Indian border but that cannot be a viable reason , isnt it .

Elections are round the corner and new government can go just opposite.

So we shouldn't take it that seriously. Let the new govt. come and then deal with it. Why waste resources if there might be complete reversal of policy by next govt.

How :woot: ??
I know Lahore is close to the Indian border but that cannot be a viable reason , isnt it .

Not just because it is near the border, but also because it is one of the biggest cities with great population and high per capita, and is near Wagah border.

There is only one border point between India and Pakistan that can facilitate large amount of road traffic between the two countries, it is Wagah Border.

The day MFN is awarded, there will be a sudden, manifold increase in road traffic. It being a single point, Wagah will turn out to be a bottleneck for both sides resulting in miles long queues of trucks with perishable goods.

Where do you think those goods are going to get stored? Attari and Lahore will both see a great rise in the number of markets and storage facilities. More Lahore, than Attari/Amritsar.

And for Indian traders, Lahore will be the nearest big city in Pakistan to dump their goods at. When Lahore is there just across the border, why would they take the pain to go to far away cities such as Karachi... at the ocean. Besides, if navies on both sides can manage it safely, then Karachi can be flooded with Indian goods coming through Mumbai and Gujarat.

So when MFN comes into effect, Lahore is going to witness an explosion in urban areas with numerous high value markets cropping up everywhere, resulting in rapid escalation in real estate prices and organizational services.
