Pakistan sends two planeloads of relief supplies for Lebanon

ISLAMABAD (updated on: July 28, 2006, 22:04 PST): The government on Friday sent two planeloads of food and medicines for the people of Lebanon through Syria, the foreign ministry said.

The C-130 aircraft carried 14 tons of food items and eight tons of medicines, medical supplies and surgical equipment, it said in a statement.

"On arrival at Latakia airport in Syria, the consignment will be handed over to the Lebanese government's High Relief Commission by the Embassy of Pakistan in Damascus from where it will be transported to Lebanon."

Seeing off the aircraft, Minister of State Khusro Bakhtiar expressed Pakistan's "deep concern over the plight of the Lebanese people in the face of Israeli aggression."

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told AFP the relief goods had been sent in response to the appeal launched by the Lebanese government for international assistance.

More than half a million people are displaced in Lebanon since Israel launched a military offensive on July 12 in southern Lebanon against Hizbullah.
