PNS Karrar, one of two MRTP-33 delivered to the Pakistan Navy

PAKISTAN SEEKING 4 TO 6 NEW FAST ATTACK CRAFTS TO GUARD GWADAR

According to Business Recorder, the Pakistan Navy is currently seeking four to six new fast attack craft (FAC) missile boats for guarding Gwadar, Pakistan’s new deep-sea port (and a critical piece of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor or CPEC). Speaking to The Express Tribune, Pakistan Navy officials noted that talks have already begun with Turkey and China for the FACs.

Notes & Comments:

It is likely that these FACs are primarily being sought to patrol littoral waters and to interdict and deter maritime criminal activity, such as trafficking and piracy. However, the inclusion of missile capability would indicate that these boats will double as anti-access and area denial (A2/AD) assets in wartime.

With the Azmat-class and Zarrar-class, the Pakistan Navy has experience operating Chinese and Turkish FACs, respectively. Leveraging its existing logistics and infrastructure base to add new Azmat and/or Zarrar units could be considered the most likely scenario.

The Zarrar-class (i.e. Onuk MRTP-33) is a 35-metre design which, while capable of deploying sub-sonic anti-ship missiles (such as the Harpoon Block-II), is optimized for high-speed travel (47+ knots). With a maximum range of 800 nautical miles, it is also focused for littoral water engagements.

On the other hand, the Azmat-class is a larger and longer range design at 63-tons and 1,000 nautical miles, respectively, but also slower than the MRTP-33 (with a maximum speed of 30 knots). In fact, the Pakistan Navy acquired the Azmat-class FAC to fulfill the patrol duties originally envisaged for its corvette plans, which it had dropped in the late 2000s due to Pakistan’s strenuous economic condition at the time. While classified as a FAC, some Navy officials refer to the Azmat-class FAC as a corvette.

Granted, the Pakistan Navy need not continue with the Azmat or Zarrar, but its decision will be derived on the speed, range, and payload it is looking to acquire through these FACs. While cost will be a primary factor in guiding the Navy’s decision, the entry of compact but capable subsystems (e.g. Saab Sea Giraffe 1X surveillance radar) could enable Pakistan to craft a relatively potent solution out of its future FACs.

For example, Finland’s Hamina-class FAC offers an example of how a small (250-ton) boat can be configured with multi-mission capabilities, including short-range air defence (via the Denel Umkhonto) coverage, with an emphasis on littoral defence and A2/AD.

Fast Attack Craft (Missile)
Construction of FAC(M) No 3, third vessel of Azmat class missile craft has been completed and the vessel was launched on 17 Sept 2016.

This ship is a state of the art, multi mission corvette having a length and breadth of 63 m and 8.8 m, respectively. The design draught of the ship is 2.46 m and displacement of 560 tons. The ship has maximum speed of 30 knots and a range of 1000 Nautical Miles. This ship is propelled by 04 Diesel Engines, 04 Propulsion Shafts with Fixed Pitch Propellers. The ship carries surface to surface missiles, 25 mm gun, CIWS, surface search and tracking radars. It has a stealthier design with state of the art combat system. The third vessel is an improved version compared to earlier vessels and will carry indigenous weapon system. The ship is being built under Chinese Classification Society Rules.

MRTP-33 & MILIGEM fits well 4+4 because ASW with good AAW capabilities will be very important for protection of Gawadar port.

Sir indigenous indigenous weapon system and improvements require some explanation.

Defence production book did not explicitly mention VLS but some sort of indigenous system which can support land attack & anti-ship missile, I am expecting that system to be a VLS system because non-VLS options are already available to Pakistan (in the form of ship launched C-802 & ground based C-602) so there is no need to go for an Indigenous system additionally.

Chinese Frigates presence in Arabic ocean means China not relying on us. and we need to develop more platforms as much as possible.

Yaar can't they buy ready made ships.I mean construction of new boats may take years but they want immediate induction ?

STM offers FAC-55 design to Pakistan.
FAC-55 is designed for TN Assault Boat project (10 to be produced) but It is officially introduced to Pakistan Navy officials and It is reported that Pakistan liked FAC-55.

It is actually designed to be a game changer in Aegean thanks to very fast speed and frigate like fire power.

76 mm head cannon,
RAM (21 missiles),
8 x SSMs (probably Atmaca),
4xTorpedos (probably Akya),
3D radar,
EW soft and hard suits,
50+ knots speed,
Max 600t displacement

Low siluet, stealth design, very high speed and frigate like firepower make this boat a deadly threat to enemy platforms. She can hunt a frigate and think a few of them on sea making maneuvring (55kts) against enemy assets.

@cabatli_53

Sir,
Any idea of Power Plant?

If inducted it would definitely be a very good addition to the PN.
PN also operates MRTP- 33 which should be increased to compliment these. It looks like PN might be getting most of the New designed ships from Turkey.
