Pakistan says mediation between Saudi and Iran going slowly

DUBAI (Reuters) - Pakistan’s U.S.-requested mediation efforts between Gulf rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran have been making slow progress, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Monday.

Prompted by Washington, former cricket great Khan in October visited Tehran and Riyadh to facilitate talks after attacks on Gulf oil interests that the United States blamed on Iran.

“Our mediation between Iran and Saudi Arabia has not stopped and we are making progress, but slowly,” Khan told Al Jazeera in extracts the broadcaster released from an interview to be aired in full on Wednesday.

“We have done our best to avoid a military confrontation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and our efforts have succeeded,” Qatar-based Al Jazeera also reported Khan as saying.

Shi’ite Muslim Iran has long been at odds with U.S. Gulf Sunni Arab ally Saudi Arabia.

U.S.-Iranian frictions worsened when President Donald Trump’s administration withdrew in mid-2018 from an accord limiting Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.

Iran does not want peace with it's neighbors for as long as it is self righteous and unilaterally declares itself leader of region. This means it expects regional states to consider themselves lower than Iran and to capitulate to Iranian economic and political pressures which if successful will make Iran very wealthy and powerful which is what Iranian mullahs are chasing after.

After the bombings of oil tankers they managed to scare UAE and know UAE is capitulating to some of Iranian policies in region in order to signal to Iran it has no trouble with them. Saudi Arabia not willing to accept that equation of so called 'peace' and so Iran continuing with violence and propaganda against Saudi Arabia.

Iran is not considered and will never be considered leader of region. Local people have no affection for Persian nationalism and history and do not care for their culture. Iranian mullahs delusion of modern Persian empire is reckless and will ultimately end in failure.

Maybe they can have some luck in East Asia but Levant , Hejazi and North African don't want their culture to be imported nor will they make themselves slaves for Iranian atheist fake mullah Persian nationalists.

You guys should stop bickering, if Iran gets help from China and become nuclear power they will become delusional and power hungry and will try to make Afghanistan and Pakistan extensions of Persian empire. I'm with you on this as well, they will try but won't succeed. But, if they become a nuclear power they will push their luck and especially since they are cooperating with American vision on Afghanistan and having secret talks over this. It would be better for them to abandon expansionist nationalist agenda and instead highlight beauty of their culture at their own home in form of tourism and exports.

One thing I will guarantee if they become nuclear power under current regime they gonna start a war with an Arab country almost immediately. So Arabs got to remove themselves from their delusions and stop relying on foriegn allies and make nuclear programs of their own.

They may do it with non nuclear countries not a country having nukes since ages sir.i dont feel any threat from iran no matter how powerful they are. Indian hands are not tighten they have many folds more nukes and weapons did they harmed us ?their aircraft carrier is parked since 1960s what they dis to us ?

This is good to hear, I'm hoping Pakistan become leader of it's region and Afghanistan start leaning towards Pakistani side. India/Iran gonna try to cause problems but so far Pakistan has held up very strong and embarrassed India which has much larger economy and military spending. Also Iran who threatened to use drones in Pakistan or whatever they were threatening.

In Arab world though they are dedicating all their resources to try making defacto Persian empire and they have ignited too much violence in region this is why we warning you guys. Arab leaders are too pathetic to deal with them now so until Arabs change from within, the status quo in ME will continue.

You guys have good leadership and standing and I'm sure will continue to secure your interests and deal with all threats in meantime unlike our leaders who are sitting around not taking their spot.

As a pakistani i dont want to see pakistan as leader let turkwy iran ksa fight for leadership we better be sit and watch .the core problem in ME is leadership and their proxies if every one go back to home and start fixing own home ME will be far good place . No country wants Iran to become nuclear, least of all Iranian leadership, which fears repercussions. Even China and Russia would prevent it at all cost, as Iran can be unpredictable at times.

Pakistanis and Afghans have realized the nature of their relationship with Iran. No doubts have been left. However, we still have amicable ties, as long as Pakistani interests are not threatened again.

I would not put it past the realm of possibility that Iran may become a responsible state again, especially in light of rapprochement with Turkey and Pakistan. It will have a net moderating affect on Iranian geopolitics.
