Pakistan, Saudi Arabia discuss Halal food trade and gas pipeline

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Wednesday received Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Commerce and Investment Dr Majed Abdullah Al-Qasabi and discussed the matters of mutual interest.

Dr Al-Qasabi is visiting Pakistan as a head of a 35-member Saudi delegation to participate in the 11th Session of Pak-Saudi Joint Ministerial Commission. The prime minister welcomed the holding of the Session, which is expected to enhance and strengthen bilateral economic relations.

The substantive decisions taken during the meeting of the Pak-Saudi JMC were also discussed with the Prime Minister. These include the establishment of a Working Group for export of Halal food from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia; Saudi investment in the construction of the South-North Gas Pipeline, accelerated negotiations on a bilateral investment treaty and exchange of parliamentary delegations.


In the context of export of Pakistani manpower to Saudi Arabia, the Saudi side agreed to set up a training institute in Pakistan to help meet its human resource requirements. A delegation from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development would also be received in Saudi Arabia early next week. Also the Executive Director of NAVTTC has been invited to visit Saudi Arabia. The Saudi side also agreed to visa relaxation and reduction in visa fees for Pakistanis.

PM Abbasi underscored that relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were not only important for the government but that the people of Pakistan have a special affection for Saudi Arabia and Khadim-e-al-Harmain Al-Sharifain. Dr Al-Qasabi also emphasised the importance attached by Saudi Arabia to the special relationship with Pakistan.

Good to see for the first time that Pakistan has adopted multi faceted foreign policy. They have engaged Iran and Saudis togather, also tried to get closer to Russia, good relations with China and Turkey as always. They need to maintain balance with US and everything will fall into place.

I think credit should be given to India when they came up this term of international Isolation of Pakistan, thats what pushed Pakistan for not keeping all eggs in one basket. Pakistan very soon realized that they were too dependent on US. This needs to continue with view of Pakistan first policy.

Here are the statistics:

No of Pakistanis workers in Saudi Arabia is about 1-million. Indian workers number about 2-million.
Remittance of Pakistan workers in KSA are about $6-billion per year. Indian workers remit about $11-billion.

Per last available data (2016) Pakistan total trade volume with KSA was about $2.5-billion. Imports $1.8-billion exports 0.7-billion. Indian trade volume with KSA was $25-billion. Exports to KSA $7-billion and imports $18-billion.

Undoubtedly there are genuine reasons for the good Indian –Saudi relations, my point is that the impression that Saudi Arabia is great friend of Pakistan is with doubt correct but then sovereign nations are friends with whatever country serves their national interests. No need to consider ourselves ‘Prima Donna’ Vis-a- Vis KSA. (I do not mean an Opera Singer but a person with an inflated view of his importance).

What is strange is that Pakistan is one the top remittance countries to India. India received 5-billion from Pakistan in 2016.

Iran and Saudi either getting nukes is a dangerous predicament for whole world..
Lets put it straight..Saudi is the most backward country in the world..and it is wealthy..which sets off a wrong message in global society..that if you are Islamist and backward, Allah will bestow you with lots of wealth..

The wealthy but backward Saudi Arabia has been a direct inspiration from Taliban to Al Qaida and ISIS!

dont know how we will convince our Saudi brothers to trade our Halal Donkey and Halal Dog meat from us which we faithful Pakistanis have been used to eating,

Completely agree. There is a reason why all developed countries in world have civilian governments ruled by civilians. While third world countries have military rulers as evident from North Korea, Thailand etc etc

Pakistan would have been at much higher place in the international community only if there were no military interventions.

Of course we saw the shit hit the fan when the Pakistani Parliament said we can't spare troops to Yemen.

No Panama Letters came from Riyadh or Dubai.

So the Kingdom of Nawaz went on a boot licking spree weekly to Jeddah & London.
