The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) acquired by Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), with assistance from China, would become functional by June 2013. The GNSS is a set of navigation satellites orbiting the earth and providing a geo-spatial positioning service worldwide.
The system allows a small electronic receiver to determine its location using time signals transmitted from these navigation satellites.
Talking to APP, SUPARCO spokesperson Hassam Khan said that the GNSS had tremendous applications in the fields of surveying and mapping, precision agriculture, construction and deformation monitoring, transport and aviation management, mining and agriculture, computerised land management and administration and plate-tectonics studies.
Recognizing and appreciating the large number of important applications of GNSS, SUPARCO recently organized a symposium and gathered all GNSS stakeholders, including government officials, decision makers, entrepreneurs and academia to emphasize GNSS technology and its enormous use for the socio-economic development of Pakistan.
Hassam said that SUPARCO had been mandated to develop satellite technology and applications in Pakistan. “Technology is emerging in Pakistan rapidly,” he said, “Pakistan is rich in mineral resources and an efficient system of surveying is a demand of the industry.”
He said that computerization of land parcel had also been undertaken by the government and that the Civil Aviation Authority Pakistan (CAA) was also planning to deploy space-based and ground-based infrastructure for all phases of navigation line.
Talking about applications of GNSS, he said it included digital map production for road vehicle navigation, public safety and disaster management, mapping and resource positioning, mining and quarrying among others. Replying to a question regarding the economic importance of the technology, he said that the current market was worth $150 billion and was expected to increase to more than $220 billion by 2020, as per a survey of GSA GNSS Market Survey 2012.
“The GNSS technology has the potential to provide economic and strategic opportunities,” he said.
He emphasized the need for technology companies, academia, research institutions, investors and venture capitalists to help boost the use and applications of GNSS in the country.

Does, it mean we would have a navigation system before India does ?

. .
wow didnt expect that early... Anyway great news.

how come ..?:what:we already have access to GLONASS for both military and civilain use , not to mention the american GPS itself ..!

India is already a user of GLONASS thanks to a few high-value imports. “The iPhone 4s supports GLONASS technology, so you already use GLONASS in India,” Kuznetsov said. “Every manufacturer of chip sets like Qualcomm, Broadcom, STMicroelectronics, use 2-system chipsets, using both GLONASS and GPS...They already have this in their product line,” according to Kuznetsov.

No. India already has access to GLONASS apart from what both India and Pakistan have - NavStar GPS.

What we are doing is building our own satelite navigation system called IRNS like American NavStar GPS, Russian GLONASS, Chinese BeiDou in addition to our own Space Based Augmentation System - GAGAN.

Infact even for GLONASS - India is launching some of the satellites for Russia.

What is difference b/w GNSS and Beidou GPS? or both are same? Or is that GNSS is only for civilian use?

No difference. Beidou-2/COMPASS is China's equivalent of GPS, GLONASS and Galileo.

The awesome thing is we've got access to both civilian and military signals!

.
can we use same device to retrieve signals from both GPS and Biedou?

. . .
Yes it is very much possible. A DRDO lab has developed SOC that has INS + GPS + GLONASS hybrid navigation system.

The software will compare all three positions and calculate a mean position but that does not guarantee accuracy, just more coverage, and no access to encrypted military grade signals.
Beidou will eventually become a Beidou Galeleo Hybrid system with single chip access to both systems and receiver will calculate position by satellite signals from both beidou and galaleo satellites, enhancing both accuracy and coverage...
Beidou wins

LOL what is this??just to prove DRDO system is crap?? How having beidou is better, just because it is chinese??

GLONASS we have military access, by 2017 IRNSS + GLONASS + INS will be used. As far as using Galileo and beidou, i dont think that is going to happen. europe and china are fighting over the use of frequencies, do you know that? They both plan to use same frequencies. And how do you know the algorithm that will be employed for the DRDO system??? and how can you say that Galileo system will provide you military grade signals??

receiver will calculate position by satellite signals from both beidou and galaleo satellites, enhancing both accuracy and coverage...
Beidou wins

So you think DRDO systemm doesnot do that?? It can receive signal from the satellite but cannot improve accuracy but chinese system will use signals and improve accuracy. LOL.

Wrong again.

India has access to mil grade signals of GLONASS apart from being a co-participant of the system itself. As i said, India is also launching satellites of the GLONASS system.

Secondly, India already has implemented the pilot version of Satellite Based Augmentation System and is in the process of rolling it out over entire South Asia. This system is the 3rd or the 4th system in the world if you count EU as one entity. What this does is that any signal over South Asia is augmented to increase accuracy. This increases the signal accuracy beyond what is available by reducing technical errors. This is required for extra ordinary precision for example to enhance aviation capacity of a country.

Thirdly, the point is entirely moot as India is implementing its own GPS system like NavStar or GLONASS or BeiDou.

Any and all military equipment in India will incorporate -single chip access as you put it- the Indian IRNS + Russian GLONASS + American GPS for navigation. IRNS being most important of the lot obviously.

Since you decided to point out how Pakistan wins using BeiDou, Allow me to tell you that this far exceeds anything available to and also beyond the technological capacity of Pakistan.
