Pakistan refuses MFN status to India

dont you think It was two way traffic ? Anyways a hundred years ago - French and English used to utter the same lines . One can only hope such baggages from the past dont affect the future generation at all.Anyways....

Nice sentiment, but the stories we hear from our elders regarding the savage murder of our people at the hand of your people, where infants were violated with spears, will never be forgot.

whatever.. India is royal heart nation... We given MFN status to Pakistan..
but narrow minded Pakistan...
what to do just go on....
no matter...

There is machinery etc. that is imported from China which India does not provide. You can look at the list they come up with after talks.
Everytime some significant Chinese investment or exports come in, they help Pakistan set up infrastructure etc. There is a qualitative difference in what we get from China than what we get with India (which may change in the future, but is not the case currently).

Econ101? What is that? :)

A free trade agreement with China makes even less sense from that logic. Because Chinese manufacturing sector can reduce costs in a way few other world industries can dream about . And its the case not just with India, or Pakistan but with almost every other major Chinese trading partner.

so the trade imbalance is clearly not a vital factor - when you are comfy bestowing MFN to all middle-eastern and other S.Asian economies - India should not be specially examined.

But what really matters is - even if there is a trade imbalance - the objectives of reduced cost of goods , infrastructure , economic development are served which is far more vital. Modern day economics dont go by the presumption that in event of hostilities , economic ties will break down or default.
Something like that would entail tremendous losses , irrespective of how skewed the balance of payments is - even the economic powerhouse will take a strong jolt.

And any panel of economists who do not know or acknowledge this fact is being quite economically immature.

Would you agree that interests are paramount? So in this case Pakistan-China interests are converging. Simply put, lets make hay for as long as the sun shines.

i didn't say the relationship between china & pakistan is based on paramounts.two countries will never come close to each other unless each others interest converge.its true after US, pakistan desperately need some one powerful which can fill the void.as in case of china it want a friend by which it can achieve a greater clutch in this region.
i was just replying to the fellow that no friendship is permanent & everything which happen in geopolitics has a reason hidden behind.

Yes partition was a sin. Many stories are told both sides and perhaps someday both nations will promise each other that such atrocities will never again happen. Gandhi allegedly told a Hindu who confessed to killing Muslims and Muslim children that he should seek redemption by adopting a Muslim child and raising that child as a Muslim. Perhaps India and Pakistan should exchange Muslim and Hindu "children" in the form of trade. In so doing there should be measures in place which ensures that Pakistani markets are not exploited by India and that India continues to grant MFN status to Pakistan. In doing so Pakistan should measure the Indian products such as motor vehicles which will benefit its market and reduce import tariffs on those items. It is a given fact that the Chinese are leaders in manufacture of heavy engineering machinery (I saw Chinese machinery in Delhi when I was recently there). Likewise India should remove all trade tariffs on Pakistani commodoties such as rice etc. If Indian products improve the Pakistani economy and vice versa then that will be a starting point in easing of relationships. Economic pressure will thereafter ensure that politicians on both sides resolve outstanding issues such as Kashmir etc. So the chances of both of our nations apologising to each other for the sins of the past and seeking forgiveness from each other is not so much a pipe dream after all

Looks like a section of Indian opinion is preparing grounds to justify not making progress on substantive issues. This is a replay of ideas a vocal and influential section of opinion in India has previously successfully used to scuttle talks before, maybe they will be successful again - give the people what they want, I say.

keh diya na nhi dety to nhiii detyy jao ab dimagh mat khao :P

Arrogance and ignorance is a dangerous cocktail. It is Pakistan's loss to say the least. We get more money from Pakistan in trade than Pakistan gets from India. Instead of addressing trade deficit, Pakistan is discouraging trade. Unreal and foolish.

Its not as childish as you think. Its about protecting the local economy, something that is done the world over and something that the Americans complain about all the time with regards to China. There has to be a bi-directional benefit of trade on both sides. If all we are doing is consuming your exports then what is the benefit to us aside from finding cheaper commodity goods? How does that help Pakistan in the long run?

Protectionism is something practiced the world over. Pakistan's case is not unique with regards to its dealings with India.

This was exactly the argument mooted by finance ministry in India until 1991. We opened up our economy and did not look back. We stand to gain and the simple theory of the most poor country stands to benefit most from trade between countries stands firm.

Add artificially controlled currency and you will see how bad it will be for a country to get into a death embrace with China.

Who needs an MFN

Pakistan already has trade deficit with us .
We are gaining u r losing

no one is a friend for ever in this fast changing geopolitical arena.
china is using you as to achieve its objectives just like US in the past.after US left, the void is filled by china .
who knows after achieving its objectives your beloved friend might ditch you just like US.

You seem to forget that when pakistan and china made there friendship there was no gain financial or military for either.
That friendship has remained steadfast as true friendships should do.
Its just pakistan luck that a dear childhood friend has become a billionaire and he knows that we where there with him when there was no gain in it for us.
Trying to twist them "helping us" into them trying to "use us" is nothing but bitter jealous words from from a common foe.

Y doesnt India take back the MFN status given to pakistan?atleast we should play our part since we are so small-hearted:cheesy:

and by the way Pakistan is the only country where to be a government-appointed economic policy advisor, u dont have to be economist having a harvard or LSE degree, but how much u hate India:P
