Pakistan Receives C602 Anti-ship Missiles

Bismillah ir Rahman ar Raheem

Brother, what would you say about the trajectories of the Hypersonic (actually mostly high-supersonic) AntiShipMissiles? My understanding was that they followed near-ballistic trajectories so that they would have the highest velocities and kinetic-energies when they attack from height. Nice discussion of them at The Strategist:

"...The effect on the target is due to both the explosive power of the weapon plus the energy it brings to the collision. The Harpoon relies heavily on its warhead for effect while the hypersonic weapon delivers a similar amount of energy, but entirely KE...

A related concern is that even successfully hitting an incoming weapon mightn’t be enough if it’s close enough to the ship. The effectiveness of the Phalanx gun (a ‘last ditch’ close range rapid fire system for when other defences fail) has been questioned on the grounds that the debris from the missile will continue on its inbound course and hit the ship anyway. Breaking up a hypersonic projectile could have the same effect—the pieces will still carry most of the kinetic energy of the whole..."

Can you list any hypersonic AShM missiles that have been deployed?

@Penguin

anything on these two questions, sir?

.
This missile (or was it C802?) could not take out small Israeli ship in 2008 when Hezbollah struck Israeli Naval Ship with C-602/802 etc.

Not that good.
Very late but still wanted to share some knowledge. In exercises any anti ship missile can hit the non moving dead frigate but in real life ships considering having point defense system, Anti Ship should be used in numbers plural not a single missile which will have less probability. In my opinion around 2 to 3 atleast would do, one is targetted by CIWS, while others have room to reach the target without any resistance. C802 is actually light anti ship killing 4 and damaging a corvette is what you can expect its warhead isn't enough to sink ships with one shot. requires atleast 200 to 300 kg

There are no operational/ deployed hypersonic antiship missiles at present.

Russia’s 3M22 Zircon hypersonic cruise missile is expected to enter into production in 2018. The United States is also working on hypersonic missile technologies. However, none of the Pentagon’s hypersonic missiles are anywhere close to being production ready—much less becoming operational. The most successful unclassified U.S. hypersonic program was the Boeing X-51 Waverider—which completed a six-minute flight

Brahmos II (Zircon based) is still under development

As for Phalanx and other CIWS versus hypersonic missiles, already against supersonic missiles there is an issue with missile debris still hitting a vessel. This is why you see a move to longer range antishipmissile defences e.g. 76mm Strales/Davide, RAM Block 2, ESSM with antimissile capability etc. The faster the incoming, the greater the need to detect and engage farther out, for a given response time.

C602 is a similar missile to french exocet anti ship missile and is a good missile. what was used on Israeli ship was a land based version which failed to detonate but on average this type of missile is deadly against large ships and a single missile can sink them. it is radar guided and counter measures can misguide it but missile will try to reacquire target. it is best effective when targeting a fleet. If the desired target in a fleet uses counter measure the missile will acquire alternate ship in the fleet and destroy it.

C-602 is not like Exocet. For stsarters, it has nearly twice as large a warhead.

I don't think C-602 was used against INS Hanit.

According to Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sources, the attack was conducted by Chinese C-802. Apparently, two missiles were launched toward the Israel Navy Ship (INS) Hanit (Spear), SAAR V class corvette patrolling the Lebanese coast 16 kilometers from the shore. The attack was a coordinated, simultaneous “high/low” attack - the first “high” missile passed over the Israeli ship. Missing the target, it continued flying, hitting and sinking a civilian Egyptian ship cruising 60 kilometers from the shore. The second missile followed a sea-skimming flight profile hitting the Israeli vessel at the stern, killing four sailors and setting the flight deck on fire and crippling the propulsion systems inside the hull. Surviving the potentially devastating attack INS Hanit returned to Ashdod naval base for repairs.
...
The simultaneous attack was probably using two techniques as well, ensuring maximum chances of success. The Israeli Navy believes the missiles used targeing data from Lebanese coastal radars, therefore maintaining low electro-magnetic signature throughout the attack prparation phase. The first missiles was apparently used as a radar-guided “bait”. seducing the ship to deploy its defensive systems against it, focusing all the attention on the “obvious” threat while the second sea-skimming missile closing below. A supporting fact for this assumption is the fact that the first missile locked on the unfortunate Egyptian ship 44 kilometers away, as it was the next visible target in its flightpath. The second, missile could have been guided by radar or, more probably, Electro-optically. This method would require the launch of two types of missiles, a C-801/802 for the “high” profile and a C-701 TV guided missile for the “low” profile..

Hezbollah shot C-602 or C-802..but definitely one of two.

Look it up.

It also depend on version is used, YJ-62.

Do we only have 280km range export version or also have 400+km range version of PLAN??

If that is true, than one of my dreams and Ideas is becoming reality ! That is a exelent coastal defence, but we still lack in a coastal Air Defence !

Before C-602s PN had Harpoon Coastal Defense batteries.

.
@Penguin I guess I speak for everyone, your knowledge on naval matters is one of key reasons we visit this mmm defence forum. Thank you for you patience with us dumbasses :)

.
This is a very Powerful Missile.

Specifications:
Length: 6.1 m
Diameter: 0.54 m
Weight: 1240 kg
Warhead: 300 kg (CM-602G: 480 kg)
Speed: Mach 0.9
Cruising Altitude: 7–10 m
Range: 280 km (CM-602G: 290 km)
Engine: turbojet with solid rocket booster
Guidance: inertial + active radar seeker

The "G" version can hit Ground targets too, if I m not wrong.

Well the "under Development" report is fine at this point of time...
until & unless we have an official announcement, let it be that way...:-)

There are also rumors that it is deployed through Agosta sub when necessary.

.
They get training from Iran though and some people say Iranian revolutionary guard members actually operate them during war.
I admire countries like Israel and Iran. Not pussi** at all. Altough not for General world peace.

Before C-602s PN had Harpoon Coastal Defense batteries.

Really never now about that, never read about that, never saw a single picture of such a coastal Batterie ! Iran is very famous for this coastal Batteries! Any Link, a picture would be amazing to see our kind of Batterie, was it a mobile or static Batteries or installed in Bunkers ?

Check this beast !

Hi,

Some of the readers may not understand the term ' debris ' of an incoming missile that is blown up.

It is not only the missile parts but the remaining fuel of the missile as well that is still travelling at the speed the missile was---so in a close kill---the target would also be splattered with highly flamable fuel---.

And as the fuel is out of the container and spreading wider---it would create havoc when it hits the object---the splatter would cover a much wider area of destruction and cause burns and injuries to personal and possibly more devastating than the actual hit.

Sir, check my above post, what are your thoughts about coastal defence missile batteries, Iran has mastered this kind of warfare ! Should Pakistan follow this tactic ?

.
It was C-802.

News reports indicate that this was the missile used on July 14, 2006, in the 2006 Lebanon War when Hezbollah fired two C-802 at Israeli warships. One missile hit the corvette INS Hanit, causing significant damage and four fatalities. Iran, the reported supplier of the missile to Hezbollah, refused to formally confirm or deny the claim. The Hanit suffered severe damage, but stayed afloat, got itself out of the line of fire, and made the rest of the journey back to Ashdod for repairs on its own.

The Israeli ship possessed sophisticated multi-layered missile defense capability: a Phalanx CIWS gun, Barak 1 anti-missile missiles, Chaff and ECM. These should have been able to prevent an anti-ship missile attack such as the YJ-82, but according to the Israeli military, these were intentionally disabled at the time of the alleged missile hit due to:
  • a lack of intelligence indicating Hezbollah possessed such a missile; and
  • the presence of many Israeli Air Force aircraft conducting operations in the vicinity of the ship which might have accidentally set off the ship's anti-missile/aerial threats system, with the danger of shooting down a friendly aircraft. However, the ship has an (optionally installed, especially during wartime) Identification friend or foe interrogator system to prevent attacking friendly aircraft.
Lies as usual , they were at war and everything was on.. Well, if they say the truth will anyone trust and buy their electronics and antimissile systems?

Coastal defense became a big part of naval warfare, the range of its missiles dictates the distance that enemy ships should keep from your coast line.. for their own safety!

From my times,

Kh-22

The Raduga Kh-22 (Russian: Х-22; AS-4 'Kitchen') is a large, long-range anti-ship missile developed by the Soviet Union. It was intended for use against US Navy aircraft carriers and carrier battle groups, with either a conventional or nuclear warhead
...

Design
The Kh-22 uses an Isayev liquid-fuel rocket engine, fueled with TG-02 (Tonka-250) and IRFNA (inhibited red fuming nitric acid), giving it a maximum speed of Mach 4.6 and a range of up to 600 km (320 nmi). It can be launched in either high-altitude or low-altitude mode. In high-altitude mode, it climbs to an altitude of 27,000 m (89,000 ft) and makes a high-speed dive into the target, with a terminal speed of about Mach 4.6. In low-altitude mode, it climbs to 12,000 m (39,000 ft) and makes a shallow dive at about Mach 3.5, making the final approach at an altitude under 500 m (1,600 ft). The missile is guided by a gyro-stabilized autopilot in conjunction with a radio altimeter.

Soviet tests revealed that when a shaped charge warhead weighing 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) was used in the missile, the resulting hole measured 5 m (16 ft) in diameter, and was 12 m (40 ft) deep...

-------

Currently,

DF-21

...Some U.S. analysts believe that the DF-21D doesn't fly any faster than Mach 5.

The DF-21D reentry vehicle appears to bear similarities to the American Pershing II missile's RV, deployed in 1983 and withdrawn in 1988 as part of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The Pershing II's RV weighed 1,400 lb (640 kg) and traveled at Mach 8. It was fitted with four control fins to perform a 25-G pull-up after reentering the atmosphere, then glided 30 nmi (35 mi; 56 km) to the target and pitched into a terminal dive. Army training manuals about the missile are available on the internet and public open-source literature extensively describes it. The DF-21 has a comparable range and payload. Though much is made of the DF-21D's damage infliction ability based solely on velocity and kinetic energy, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute has calculated that the energy of an inert 500 kg (1,100 lb) RV impacting at Mach 6 had similar energy to the combined kinetic and explosive power of the American subsonic Harpoon anti-ship missile, which is one-quarter the energy of the Russian supersonic 12,800 lb (5,800 kg) Kh-22 missile traveling at Mach 4 with a 2,200 lb (1,000 kg) warhead. Studies conducted by McDonnell Douglas in the 1980s found that small warheads would at least cause enough damage to warships to put them out of commission for repairs...
