Iran refuses to slash gas export price

Iran has agreed to set up the largest refinery in Pakistan at Gwadar Port with a refining capacity of 400,000 barrels per day .

ISLAMABAD:
Iran has firmly stuck to its stance and refused to bring down the price for gas export to Pakistan to match the price agreed for the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, officials say.

Pakistan and Iran have already set the price at 78% of crude oil rate for 750 million cubic feet of gas per day to be transported through a pipeline from Iran’s South Pars field to Pakistan, commonly dubbed as Iran-Pakistan pipeline. However, according to an agreement, Pakistan has the right to renegotiate the price if it finds cheaper gas from some other source.

Under the TAPI project, Pakistan will pay 69% of crude oil price for import of 1.3 billion cubic feet of gas per day.

“Pakistan can enter into fresh talks with Iran for price revision after gas flow starts from alternative resources,” a senior government official said, promptly clarifying as gas supply from Turkmenistan has not started, “we cannot engage into negotiations with Tehran.”

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Adviser to Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain disclosed that all technical matters for the award of gas pipeline construction contract to an Iranian company had been finalised. However, he cautioned that some financial issues still needed to be resolved.

A team of Inter State Gas Systems (ISGS) – which works on gas import projects – had to leave for Iran on Wednesday night to resolve these issues. “Construction contract will be signed in Pakistan,” he said.

Iran to set up largest refinery at Gwadar

In a positive development, Iran has agreed to set up the largest refinery in Pakistan at Gwadar Port with refining capacity of 400,000 barrels per day in a joint venture with oil marketing giant Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

“The two countries will ink an agreement on the refinery project during the visit of President Asif Ali Zardari to Iran on February 27,” Hussain said.

Pakistan and Iran agreed to establish the oil refinery during the visit of Iranian Energy Minister Rostam Ghasemi to Islamabad on Wednesday. The Iranian minister also offered to provide liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to ease Pakistan’s energy woes.

According to sources, Iran will export 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day for the refinery. For this, it is interested in setting up an oil pipeline between the two countries.

Experts call the proposed refinery project a major milestone in the wake of handing over of Gwadar Port operations to China. The refinery will help meet oil needs of China as well.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari reiterated the commitment of the government to further bolster Pak- Iran bilateral trade by vigorously pursuing mega projects in all areas particularly energy, trade and economic fields, during his meeting with an Iranian delegation on Wednesday.

The delegation was led by Rostam Ghasemi, Iran’s Oil Minister, who met with the President at the President House – the Aiwan-e-Sadr.

ISLAMABAD:
Tehran has assured Islamabad of its support in quelling sectarian violence in Balochistan by sharing intelligence on terrorist groups based or active along the Pakistan-Iran border.

Pakistani officials told The Express Tribune on Tuesday that Iran responded positively to Pakistan’s request for intelligence sharing, following a devastating attack on Shia Hazaras in Quetta.

They added that Interior Minister Rehman Malik sought on Monday Tehran’s help during meetings with his Iranian counterpart, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, during his visit to Iran.

“Tehran will go the extra mile to help Islamabad bring the killers of Hazara Shias to book,” a senior official – who accompanied Malik on the trip – quoted the Iranian home minister as saying.

Both countries also agreed to set up two more check posts on the border to counter terrorists, illegal trespassing and drug smuggling, interior ministry officials said.

Najjar told Malik that a delegation from Iran would visit Islamabad to chalk out fresh ways to combat sectarian violence on both sides of the border, the officials added. The delegation is likely to arrive in Islamabad for the meetings in the first week of March.

Both sides agreed that their intelligence agencies would focus on the problems of the Hazaras in Quetta as well as in Mashad, Iran.

Officials said that Najjar and Malik signed an agreement to enhance security cooperation, and underlined the necessity for a joint campaign against terrorism in the region.

Both leaders discussed the newly proposed Navy base Iran is planning on establishing in the Sea of Oman near Pakistan’s border in Gwadar.

The Iranian president had, during a meeting with Malik, also condemned sectarian violence in Quetta, officials said.

Meanwhile, Ahlul Bayt News Agency quoted Malik as saying that the ongoing situation in Pakistan today is like that of Iran’s in the past. “A couple of years ago, Iran was entangled with terrorist group Jundullah and today Pakistan is engaged with dozens of terrorist group such as Jundullah,” he said.

Meanwhile, regarding the Sunni-Shia conflict, a former Pakistan ambassador said that Tehran has a major role in healing the chronic wounds of both communities.

Iran can spearhead a regional conference of Shia and Sunni scholars with the support of Pakistan, said BA Malik. If Sunni-majority Pakistan and Shia-majority Iran can bridge the gap between the two denominations within Islam, it would reduce tension and turn the resource-rich region into an economic power house, he concluded.

It seems ties are developing in recent weeks much faster.
If Iran and Pakistan 'truly' have a cooperation against terrorism, I will assure, at least Baloochestan region will be free of terrorists in less than a year.

Dude the BLA & the BRA etc. are alleged to be supported by our arch nemesis as proxies against Pakistan for payback for Kashmir & are alleged to be housed in Afghanistan like was the case in every single Baluch Uprising in the past; I don't think Iran has a hand in it or could do much about it to help us there !

We can't blame all of it on foreign countries, and yes, Iran can provide intelligence assistance to Pakistan and cooperating with Pak army fighting terrorists. We have good experience in it, much better than most countries. Cooperation never has any harm.

Only because you barely see any suicide bombing in Iran doesn't mean nobody is trying to do so.Especially in Iran with more than 85% Shias, which is a paradise for suicide nutjobs. You know, Shias are their means for meeting 72 virgins after all.

PS: You don't know the potential of a stable Pakistan, or maybe you know!:) Your human resources is great, just need a proper management. We give you natural resources, you use it to move Pakistan forward properly, with management of a great leader.
