My dearest India is not the standard. If we want to be better we have to stop comparing with or idealizing India.

This slavery index created by those who traded slaves about a century ago. They discriminated black on the basis of color until about 5 decades ago. Pakistan is on the slavery index being a believer of a religion which freed slaves 1400 years ago! Do we still not understand what depths of humiliation we have fallen to!!?

Well in the case of child labour, it is mainly due to wages being so low that a single wage earger can't feed his 6-7 kids AND send them to school. Top that up with no child benefits as such from the government, it leaves little choice for the poor but to send their kids to find work. This could be tackled via apprenticeships and increasing of wages, together with educating people and making education mandatory, but there is no will here. Politicians tell us that drone strikes and the name of the prime minister is more important then getting rid of poverty and combating ignorance. Mullahs tell us its more important to find a kafir or blasphemer. The army tells us we are at war. Jinnah's (rh) Pakistan died with him.

Not only in informal sector, most of the jobs in corporate sector also often require a bonded period for employee. Also a form of bonded labour.

What the hell can you get a 5yr old to do

Trust me, it's not pleasant. Until some time back in India, little children were employed to roll a certain kind of beedi (cigarette like product) because their small hands made the packaging tighter, and the beedi more enjoyable to smoke. Many of these children would go on to develop skin cancer due to the exposure to tobbacco leaves. Another dangerous industry that hired children was fireworks, again for similar reasons. A place in Tamil Nadu called Shivakasi was (is) notorious for employing children to do that highly hazardous job. Most of the factories were unregistered, and therefore did not follow any safetly protocols, and every time there would be an explosion or fire, the children would die horrible deaths. That town used to produce fireworks and matchboxes used all across India and South Asia.

Another benefit of employing children is that they only need to be paid a pittance - so the employers make a lot of profit.

It's not just Pakistan, the whole sub continent is infested with this problem. we love to preach about how child labor is illegal and immoral but still some of us or at least people we know would have little kids working at home.

it is mainly due to poor economical condition.i know a few family who has to send people for work because if they don't,they'll have to remain hungry.Child labour is of course one of the most controversial part in India,but no father/mother sends them for work if they aren't forced to.

Lets be realistic here, Slavery does exist in Pakistan... no one can deny it ... look around in brick making factories, most of the people are held against there wishes by the owners, for different reason, the main being exploiting their needs by giving them loans on interest, which these people are unable to pay back hence becoming slaves...... sad shameful but true...

Most fireworks expended during Diwali and other major festivals are manufactured there, using the blood, toil, sweat and tears or 5-10 year old children. Hit them where it hurts - their purse strings.

I don't buy crackers because I believe Diwali is about light not sound and smoke. But now there is this added reason.
