I think there is an error in the article, in the part that I quoted. It says India ranks 7 on the prevalence index, whereas Pak ranks 6. Since the percentage per population is very slightly more in India, India should have a lower rank than Pak. And sure enough, when I clicked on the prevalence statistics for India, the rank given there is 5, which makes sense if Pak is 6.

So my point is that a law can do practically nothing, but giving them the right incentives can. Make it better for people to send their children to school, rather than to work. Ithink that paying impoverished families a monthly stipend on the condition that their children will attend school regularly, would work. If the govt pays them a little more than what a child can earn, logic dictates that parents would want children to go to school.
Reforms are all about proper incentives not money. I think your previous governments handled education sector in India pretty well and its going to be a backbone of future to come Google, Microsoft, Apple and NASAs of India! Well done!

Why shouldn't we? If PMLN is in federal government, where is its writ of state? If only 2 % Pakistanis pay taxes, what's hindering this 2/3 majority government from making more strict taxation laws and actually implementing them? Oh, I forgot, majority of these lawmakers themselves pay none to pennies in taxes :D

I have told them before I do not blindly support IK. I have serious issues with him on Qadiani religion and other minorities, yet these PDF'ers do not stop denouncing me as blind supporter of IK :(

That makes sense, NS pays about 5k rupees in taxes while sporting a millions of $$ watch. We know what the problems are, we just don't have the solution, apparently.

No one is prefect bro, we have to make things work with whatever we got. But it starts with a taking a step in the right direction no matter how small it is.

Solutions are there. Reform entire election system in Pakistan per PTI / PAT demands. Redo fair and free election under strict scrutiny of new election commission. And whoops old status quo is removed like old garbage and thrown in dustbins of history. Solution is simple: one man - one vote and sanctity of the vote.

PMLN yaad agiyea
@Akheilos it has nothing much to do with PMLN, PPP or PTI. This slavery is rampant in Pakistani society since its birth.

PMLN yaad agiyea :p:
lol don't want to indulge into local politics of Pakistan. but such social issues must be seen without political barriers. Being an Indian I can't preach you about how beautiful our country is but what I can suggest is about why local politics shouldn't come between when it comes to social issues. Our politcal parties divided our people in numerous castes and sub castes along with religion but National issues must take importance across the party lines. Good things must be appreciated and wrong things should be criticized.

Without doubt, slavery in Subcontinent is social, irrelevant of local politics. Thanks for confirming my assertion!

Try preaching our local politicians that :azn:
I do agree....but the problem is no amount of criticism seems to snap some to their senses
you guys are still new to the democracy, heck even we were being ruled by one family for our last 60+ years of democracy. It will take time just don't loose hope. If not IK then there will be someone else who will rise through the ranks all you need to do is believe in power of people.

slavery just changed its face ... earlier it was white on brown but no one cared about brown on brown slavery in the name of dividing factors easily available in our own society.

.
I absolutely agree, but the reason I didn't mention this is because it's linked with how many funds the government can get. Last time I checked, not even 2% of the Pakistani population paid any taxes.
You are talking about income tax. That is only a small part of gov revenue. Everybody pays taxes, for example when they buy something, there is a sales tax that goes to the govt.

Now it is a fact that GoP is not exactly flush with money, but we are only talking about handing out the amount of money that could be obtained from child labour. Back of the envelop calculations tell me that that would not be a big burden. Today there was a news that the legal minimum wage for adults in Pak is 12,000 rupees a month. We know that many adult workers, especially in the disorganized sectors, do not earn anywhere close to that. We can safely assume that the wages made by a child labourer will be far less. Let's be generous and say they earn 5,000 per month.

The number of children who do not attend schools in Pak is about 5 million. To pay their families 5,000 rupees per child on the condition that the children will attend school regularly would cost 25 billion rupees a month. That's about 245 million US dollars a month, or 2.5 billion dollars a year, assuming ten working months. Is that really such a high price to pay? Surely they will bring several times more than that through economic activity, once they finish their education.

Actually problem in Pakistan is the other way around. Education must resonate all economic sectors of a society. Best Pakistanis are mostly overqualified for the jobs they are educated for, so they leave the country causing massive brain drain in the long run. I personally know dozens of people; my classmates, my friends, my relatives who left Pakistan for better work opportunities and now work in the West as successful doctors, surgeons, software engineers, professors and all other good paying sectors. THAT is the real problem, not lack of education itself but productive good-paying jobs

Some 2 million Pakistanis – roughly 1.130% of the country’s population – especially children and bonded labourers, are thought to be enslaved, according to the report.
The report defines modern slavery as involving “one person possessing or controlling another person in such a way as to significantly deprive that person of their individual liberty, with the intention of exploiting that person through their use, management, profit, transfer or disposal.”
They sure its only 2 million?

THAT definition is not very specific and can fit to alot of different things around the world! Leaves me to question what sort of research was conducted and was it only targeted to a certain term that they were looking for that fit the definition because, media giants, fashion industry, drug lords, tobacco tycoons, prostitution pimps, and many other things can fit in perfectly well too!!!

Terming debt-bondage as the most prevalent form of modern slavery in Pakistan, the report identified Punjab and Sindh as hotspots of bonded labour, with brick making, agriculture, and carpet weaving industries leading destination for such ‘slaves’.
According to the report, Pakistan ranks sixth on index in terms of prevalence in the country with 1.130 per cent of total population trapped under modern slavery.
I would term culture boundedness and social conscious as a slavery!

half of the approximately 10,500 brick kilns in Punjab remain unregistered.
Well, when elites rule, they dont see this as mismanagement...nor do they even look at it as a problem...it hits the blind spot...Heck it even hits the blind spot of the normal human beings who dont pay zakat and the corrupted poor who steal even when they have "enough" or those who have sufficient but always linger for more....

If everyone did their jobs (from employers to lawmakers, to regulators, to those who the local neighbour to report and for those who take in the report to implement the laws the lawmakers made....) it could be minimized...

Decrying provincial governments’ lack of interest, despite the devolution of powers to the provinces, including responsibility for labour, child protection, and women’s protection after the 18th amendment in the Constitution, the report said that there is no single national-level body exists to oversee a coordinated response to the modern slavery challenges that Pakistan faces.
could have saved me time from typing had I read along...

Cross-border human trafficking remains under the purview of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control, but there is no national level mechanism to address internal trafficking, said report.
Another heartburn!

kept in captivity by armed guards or their family members become virtual hostages
Thats no slavery thats just bullying!

farmers and landlords in Sindh
Of course the root source

Farmers, who are referred as ‘Hari’ under these unofficial contracts, are required to give up their entire yield to the landlords who employ them and are paid only in produce. In order to meet living costs beyond food and shelter, these farmers are forced to borrow money from their landlord, which reinforces the cycle of poverty, debt and forced labour.
The cycle....Everyone knows it but anyone opening their mouths either ends up loosing their job, is found dead, or just disappears or just gets paid off :( stinky people!

five and 14 years old.

What the hell can you get a 5yr old to do :o: :cray:
