Figures on dismal state of education embarrass lawmakers

Parliamentarians were embarrassed on Thursday when facts about the declining state of education in the country were presented in the meeting of the special parliamentary committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The committee was told that according to recently issued statistics of Unesco, Pakistan is ranks second after Nigeria of countries where children failed to get access to primary education.

In Nigeria, 10.5 million children were not going to schools while in Pakistan 5.1 million children were not able to enrol in primary schools.Ethiopia is the third country after Pakistan where 2.4 million children were not enrolled in the schools and India ranks fourth where 2.3 million children failed to enrol.

The most embarrassing fact is that among the eight countries of the South Asia region, Pakistan stands last after Nepal where the literacy rate is 74 percent. The United Nations has set 4 percent of GDP for education as an international standard while the declining state of education in Pakistan shows that 13 years ago Pakistan was spending 2 percent of GDP on education and it still stands at the same position with spending on education at just 2 percent of the GDP.

Maryam Aurangzeb, who was heading the parliamentary committee, proposed imposition of education emergency in the country.According to a report on Pakistan’s status on MDGs, only one teacher was educating five classes in 30 percent of middle schools. Around 20.5 million children were not going to schools and out of every 10 children who were not going to school, one belongs to Pakistan. In the MDGs, the target of 88 percent literacy rate was fixed but so far Pakistan’s literacy rate is only 57 percent.

I think it doesn't count this year's extended allocation for the education sector. It will gradually be improved Insha'Allah as believe handsome amount of budget was allocated for education in year 2013/14 by all the provinces as well as the federation.

India has six times more population than Pakistan but half the numer of children not getting access to primary education. That tells a lot, we are 12 times more effective in curbing illiteracy than our western neighbour.

I am pretty much sure the statistics were incorrect as I checked last time, the figure went into crores (tens of millions) about the children's not attending School in India and it is not possible to reduce that figure so quickly. However I do agree that India's focus on Education has been since the independence so they have done remarkable work in education sector. Indian literacy rate before the partition was much higher comparing to Pakistan (although the % was very low for both nations) and their focus on higher education since 1960s has been remarkable and an example for all.

Don't worry it is easier to curb the figure in Pakistan due to the less population but everything takes time so I am very optimistic about it.

It is a matter of Shame infact. Education has always been way down in the priority list infact!

On one hand, Indians love to call Pakistan a failed state, and on the other, they don't mind comparing such data with Pakistan to feel better. Can feel better, but not good.

With third largest GDP, much higher per capita income than Pakistan, better organized educational system since the inception of the republic, India should have done a lot better than this and not be ranked number 4 in terms of failure to provide education to the needy.

Both the countries are in the same class, rather India appears way worse than Pakistan when the aforementioned factors are also taken into consideration.

No wonder the data from Pakistan has become the only source of solace.

Nothing much to discuss after that.UNESCO must come up with data favouring Pakistan, then only we can have discussion.

This link of UNESCO says... 35 million children in India do not attend School whereas 5.7 million children in Pakistan are not attending School

http://www.unesco.org/education/efa/global_co/policy_group/children_out_of_school.pdf

As I said the figures mentioned in the first post are incorrect but I am really not in mood of comparing children's not attending school. It is a matter of shame for all of us.

Good! Because when you come out to start a comparison where it is completely uncalled for, you should be thankful even for any bickering you can garner. Serves the purpose, eh?

Come on Zakii, where am I trolling? The focus is on Pakistan, why should we drag in a needless and unreasonable comparison?

P.S.: We did talk about the flag part, I would rather be banned than use the flag of any nation that has had any effects on the geopolitical situations in South Asia. You are the mod, you do know what to do.
