ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN — Pakistan harvested a record rice crop of 8.9 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year, up from 8.4 million tonnes the prior year, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network report from the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“New higher-yielding hybrid rice varieties, improved agronomic practices and increased planting area, as farmers shift out of cotton, are factors driving the increased production,” the USDA said.

The agency noted that the Pakistan government’s policy of ensuring rice growers had adequate inputs also contributed to the record production.
Meanwhile, the country’s rice exports in 2020-21 (November-October) were stagnant at 3.8 million tonnes, virtually unchanged from the previous year, the report said. Supply chain disruptions, shipping container shortages, and high transportation costs negatively impacted rice exports.
With this year’s record production adding more stocks, total available supply is estimated to be 11 million tonnes, the USDA said.
“Domestic rice consumption is 3.7 million tonnes, leaving an exportable supply of 7.3 million tonnes for 2021-22,” the USDA said. “This large surplus will provide an opportunity to significantly increase exports, but Pakistani rice will continue to face stiff competition from India and Southeast Asia suppliers.”

Sindh has to get credit for intprducing hybrid with great productivity

Pakistan lacks enough ports and shipping cacapcity

Gawadar is great but not for pakistan

We nees ports near karachi like keti bandar or gaddani omara

one of my friends is in the rice export business, he told me thousands of tons rice was being smuggled to iran and afghanistan .

after fencing afghanistan and now iran border, the smuggling has now dropped almost 70 % and the iranians are not happy about this ( maybe this explains the BLA uptick in attacks)

weird neighbors we have !

8.9 million tons divided by 200 milli9n Pakistanis
That's 44 kg of rice per Pakistani.
Also produced 27 million tons of wheat in 2021-22 season.
That's 135 kg wheat per Pakistani.
Not bad.

We can double the production because we have unused land. Half of the Balochistan can be turn to farmland.

If they stop blowing up the roads and infrastructure, then yes.
As things stands now, they are more interested in smuggled irani diesel than wheat.

. . .

Water is free, we just need to channel it in the right direction. Building canal, Building dams and build above and underground rain water reservoirs.
Genetically modified drought resistance seed can be planted.

If Israel can do in desert, can do they same in Balochistan.

Yep, not a straight forward process. Pakistan is a water scarce country and it will take a while.

Israel's 'making the desert bloom' is largely a hype. Plenty of desert in Israel.

The Israeli use recycled waste water in agriculture.....I practice I wouldn't support in un-policed Pakistan for any food headed for human consumption.

There is plenty of water in Pakistan. If we don’t build dams, artificial lakes, canal system and above and underground water reservoirs, water will end up in the sea.

Post from 2018:
We need a new Water conservation policy.

Government must take these steps to implement this policy.

  1. Media (Print media, TV/Radio, Social media) campaign to conserve water.
  2. New technology for gray and black water treatment plant.
  3. Work on Water reservoirs and rain harvesting system.
  4. More than half of the irrigation water is wasted due to poorly managed irrigation system and inadequate water infrastructure.
  5. Money for Bhasha dam should collected and building should start soon.
  6. We also need small water storage dams countrywide on a fast track basis. We have a potential to build 800 small dams/water reservoirs. There is a immediate need to build 100 dams in Punjab, 60 in Sindh, 40 in KPK and 30 in Balochistan.
  7. We can build underground and above ground water reservoirs, reservoirs with floating wetlands can be introduce to prevent water evaporations. Qanat system or canal system can be used to distribute water to remote areas
  8. For the coastal areas in Sindh and Balochistan, Government need to introduce Newest desalination technology.
  9. Karachi needs a mega desalination plant. Also, since Zardari is going to build a new city zulfiqarab in Sindh coastal area, there should also be a desalination plant.

Post from 2018:
I support more water storage but best way to be efficient with water is not to grow rice with it. Its a very water intensive crop and best grown in northern Pakistan. Sind and Baluchistan should both focus on wheat, cotton and other less water intensive crops. Places like Israel don't produce rice in any significance. Parts of Asia with high rainfall are the best places to grow rice.

I am glad somebody pointed it out. Rice is the enemy of water.
1) Need lots of water to grow.
2) Needs lots of water to cook.
3) Needs lots of water to digest.
So need to be careful when talking about rice.
