Pakistan police say army kills 3 suspected bombers

By RIAZ KHAN (AP) – 12 minutes ago

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Army guards shot and killed three suspected suicide bombers as they tried to enter a sprawling military firing range in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, police said.

Four soldiers were wounded in the attack, which showed the persistent threat insurgents pose to Pakistan's security forces, especially those operating near the Afghan border.

Police official Akhtar Ali Shah said the assailants refused to stop for a check at the entrance to the range in the northwestern city of Mardan, prompting the guards to open fire.

The men wore suicide jackets that detonated when they were shot at, wounding the soldiers. Police had collected body parts of the attackers for DNA test, Shah said.

Mardan, which lies about 30 miles (50 kilometers) away from the northwest's main city of Peshawar, has witnessed several attacks blamed on Taliban and other Islamist militant groups that have proliferated along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

In Pakistan's southwest, meanwhile, gunmen killed Baluch nationalist activist Haji Liaquat in Qilat town, said Ghulam Moeenuddin, a security official in the area.

Liaquat was a member of the Baluchistan National Party. The party's secretary-general, Habib Jalib, was killed last week in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province.

The province has long been the scene of a nationalist movement and insurgency aimed at gaining more autonomy and a greater share of the wealth mined from its natural resources. Targeted killings are common in the region.

Associated Press writer Abdul Sattar contributed to this report from Quetta.

Five terrorists perish in Mardan suicide attack

PESHAWAR: Five militants, three of them wearing suicide bomb vests, were killed on Tuesday when they attacked a military training centre here in Mardan, officials said.

The armed attackers tried to enter the training ground in the northwestern town of Mardan and a gun battle with security forces ensued, leaving all five militants dead and four soldiers wounded, a senior security official told media.

"An attack on the Punjab Regiment Centre (PRC) in Mardan was averted this morning by security forces," the official said.

"Five militants including three suicide attackers were killed when they tried to enter the training area. Four soldiers were injured," the official said.

Another security official and intelligence officials confirmed the incident and death toll.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Taliban militants have been active in the area and have carried out several attacks on government and military targets in the past.

Bombs and attacks blamed on Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants have killed more than 3,560 people across nuclear-armed Pakistan since government troops besieged a radical mosque in Islamabad in July 2007.

Much of the violence has been concentrated in northwest Pakistan and the border areas with Afghanistan, where around 143,000 US and NATO troops are battling to turn around a nine-year war against Taliban insurgents.
