SRINAGAR: In what can be termed as an embarrassment for Modi-government which twice cancelled talks with Pakistan over Pakistani leaders meeting with Kashmiri separatist leaders, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaiz Sharif has reiterated his country’s support to “freedom struggle” in Kashmir and praised “determination” and “struggle” of woman separatist leader Asiya Andrabi in a letter written to her.
According to Asiya Andrbai’s Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif has responded to a letter sent to him by Asiya regarding the Kashmir issue. The letter dated September 30 and written is Urdu is signed by Sharif.
In the letter to the woman separatist leader, Pakistan PM wrote, “'I am thankful to you for your ideas and sentiments. The faith expressed by you on Pakistan's current stand on Kashmir is a matter of satisfaction for me''.
Andrabi and other separatist leaders in the Valley including hardliner Syed Ali Geelani have been praising Nawaz Sharif for his government’s stand on Kashmir. The separatist camp in the Valley was upset over Pakistan’s previous PPP government’s soft stand on the Kashmir issue.
According to contents of the letter, Nawaiz said Pakistan does not consider Kashmir to be a geographical or border dispute but a dispute due to unfinished business of partition of the subcontinent in 1947.
“The essence of the principles of partition is that the Muslim-majority J&K should be given the right to self determination, which has been recognised by the entire world through United Nations. And India itself has promised to world community that people of Kashmir would be given the right to choose its political future through self determination,” he said adding backtracking from this promise would be betrayal of the promise.
Rejecting the notion that UN resolutions were outdated and non practicable, Nawaz said, “Lapse of a long time does not mean that the UN resolutions on Kashmir have become outdated.”
He reiterated his country’s support to “freedom struggle” in Kashmir. “We will continue to provide moral, diplomatic and political support to people of Kashmir”.
Nawaz also had a praise for Asiya, chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of Nation) and who favours merger of J&K with Pakistan.
“Your struggle, sacrifices and determination is something to be proud of. It has lead a new zeal and zest to struggle for self determination and now nobody can rob the Kashmiris of this right. Every new day lends a new life and strength to this struggle. The day is not far when shackles of “occupation” will be broken and struggle of daughters of Kashmir will yield a result,” he said while referring to Asiya.
Continuing her praise for her, Pakistan PM said, “People in Kashmir under a leadership like yours are carrying on an exemplary struggle and have given historic sacrifices. These sacrifices have only increased the importance of resolution of the Kashmir issue. No matter what India says, the resolution of Kashmir can be only achieved through a free and fair right to self determination”.
Asiya is a hardline separatist leader and her husband Qasim Faktoo is undergoing life imprisonment and has been in jail for over two decades.
Asiya was detained by police last week ahead of her scheduled telephone address to a rally in United Kingdom to protest Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Britain. She was also detained ahead of PM Modi’s November 7 rally in Srinagar. Earlier, also she was arrested for singing Pakistani national anthem and waving Pakistani flags during Pakistan’s independence day on August 14.
