When your nation is on prime time news around the world and the issue is resuce for a life and death related situation, you don't ask " have you paid your $6000 fee"---you don't look for pea nuts---world wide attention is thousands of times worth than the minimal cash involved. It becomes a humanitarian issue. The helicopters are flying above their max limits---so if something goes wrong a chopper and a minimal of two lives will be lost.

So, when the time comes for you to be the prime minister of india, please keep that in mind---humanitarian casues come without upfront payment in mind.

Two lives is minimal? Two additional lives is too much - especially if they are trained men of the armed forces.

Anyway Its not a question of whether they prepaid or not. its a question of them paying for whatever services they received in the end. all these expeditions should have the financial means to pay for the emergencies in the end.

Take the example of the US. Say one of your relatives visit the US - they visit a park, go on a trek / walk slip and fall, and break a leg or something. The 911 services will rescue you, treat you, take you to a hospital. the hospital will give all the treatment. But in the end - they will also slap them with a hefty bill - esp if they do not have any kind of insurance (whether they pay it or not is another matter - but there are no free lunches in this country) (Also even with insurance - they will get slapped with a decent enough bill)

Infact this is just what the Swiss do - you get stuck in the alps and they rescue you - you will foot the bill in the end

6000$ is not a small amount, it can take care of the needs for a dozen orphaned children for an year. There is no reason to be overly sentimental and give free service.

So, when the time comes for you to be the prime minister of india, please keep that in mind---humanitarian casues come without upfront payment in mind.

Ofcourse Pakistan is well within its rights to offer this free service. You can offer it when you become President of Pakistan, but I wont offer it if i become PM of India

The rescue bid became a military mission for these guys after they were ordered to rescue these folks by no less than the CoAS of the Pakistan Army. At this point, the money and resources are not a consideration.

In terms of money, all expeditions going through Pakistan have to deposit a certain amount of money because there is a history of people requiring rescue and assistance and the PTA requires the money to be deposited in advance. So when all is said and done, I am sure the cost of rescuing Tomaz was more than the 6K that he had to deposit, but due to the fact that this had become a military mission for the units on the ground, money was not an inhibiting factor.

When it comes to High Altitude Helicopter Flying, PAF and IAF are the best in the world, no doubt about that
