Pakistan panic, call up Yousuf for England series
Sunday, 01 Aug, 2010
Mohammad Yousuf and uncapped left-arm spinner Raza Hassan have been called up to strengthen Pakistan for the remainder of the England series after the visitors suffered a humiliating 354-run loss at Trent Bridge.
The move seems a little illogical but little logic is expected when its the Pakistan Cricket Board making the decisions. Younis Khan, who is already in England playing county cricket with Surrey, has once again been ignored and it seems almost certain now that the reasons are other than cricket.
Yousuf will be travelling to England on the back of some local club level tournaments, according to chief selector Mohsin Khan. With the ball moving 2-3 feet laterally in England, things might be a little different for the 35-year-old.
Raza Hassan is another odd choice considering the presence of Saeed Ajmal and if anything Pakistan would have been better off with the inclusion of another batsman or seamer. Raza will come in place of Danish Kaneria who has been dropped for the rest of the series.
A brief statement issued by the PCB in Lahore said: Danish Kaneria is released from the national team and he is now available to play for his county Essex. His services will be available for national squad if required.
Mohammad Yousuf and Raza Hasan (a left-arm spinner) are added to the national squad with immediate effect.
Kaneria was dropped after a hugely expensive match return of one wicket for 171 runs at Trent Bridge.
Yousuf, on the other hand, effectively took the spot of the previously unreplaced Shahid Afridi, who announced his intention to quit Test cricket after captaining Pakistan to a 150-run loss against Australia at Lords last month and was then ruled out of the teams remaining Tests on their tour of England with a side strain.
The second test starts at Edgbaston on Friday.
