You can learn about the process of election after the death of Prophet Muhammad from the Muhammad Haikal written book, famous Egyptian Historian. There were debate and votes, very very modern system. Two leaders from Anshar (biggest in population) and Quraish (minority) were in competition. The result showing that Quraish winning shows the election is based on rational rather than majority vs minority power composition as like Today democracy in modern world.

Expropriation of power based on popularity, promises, power or prosperity etc are not metrics of choosing or assigning a leader. Likewise appropriation of power by moneyed elites, partisans, zealots or ideologues... but mostly these days their clients or lobbyists. People have, and are known by their tribes and nations they belong to... it is not without reason that Germans formed a nation, or tribes of Isreal coalesced to form a nation... just like that expropriation or appropriation of power is a corruption. And it is not without reason that we have devolved to the degeneracy we see around us today.
What you attributed conveniently as democracy is anything but... it is a consultation among nations and tribes to choose the best amongst them irrespective of the size of his tribe or his ability to appropriate the people of other nations or tribes to garner favors, fancy dreams or charm them in general to win a popularity contest.
It is honest! As each knows who he represents, himself and his people! He knows who will keep that peace and be just among his nations and granting them equal opportunity in the comity of nations... among the Mohajirun(Quraish and it's sub clans)and the Ansar(formerly feuding tribes of Aws and Khzraj)...
