(Reuters) - Pakistan security officials said on Thursday they had arrested a top militant near the Afghan border but not a Pakistani Taliban leader who colleagues had identified last week as a man who once tried to blow up former president Pervez Musharraf.

Security officials said on July 15 the military had captured Adnan Rashid, who was accused of trying to kill Musharraf in a 2003 bomb attack and who later escaped from jail, in the South Waziristan region near the Afghan border.

The officials hailed the arrest, which followed a shootout, as the first major catch since the army ‮launched an offensive against al Qaeda-linked militants along the Afghan border last month.

The government and army did not officially confirm the arrest at the time.

Later, various other security officials said it was not Rashid who had been captured but an important al Qaeda bomb-maker and trainer.

"A high-value target has indeed been arrested but it is not Adnan Rashid," one of the officials told Reuters. "There was a mix-up."

The official, who declined to be identified as he is not authorized to speak to the media, declined to identify the trainer or give details about him except to say he had extensive experience in training suicide bombers and making bombs.

Two other officials also said Rashid had not been arrested.

Rashid, is believed to be in his mid-30s and is a former Pakistani air force officer who tried to become a suicide bomber before he was jailed for the attempt to blow up Musharraf.

He escaped from jail in 2012 along with nearly 400 other militants.

Several Pakistani Taliban commanders also said Rashid had not been captured.

"The news that Adnan Rashid was arrested is completely baseless,"‮‮ ‬‬a Taliban commander who identified himself by his first name,‮‮ ‬‬Sabir, told Reuters by telephone.

"He is free and safe and protected by his 12 suicide-bomber bodyguards who never leave his side. His family is with him."

Two militant associates of Rashid said false reports of his arrest had been spread in an attempt to get him to react so that security forces could trace his whereabouts.

The Pakistan army and the government declined to comment.

Knew it. So basically that makes the score zero again... Army sources lied again regarding Adnan Rasheeds capture!

Till date no big leader killed/captured by Pakistan. Slaves arent as good as the masters (US). Yet people put ISI above CIA/Mossad

Army sources never said anything about it... and it was actually taleban sources who confirmed his arrest... army sources would be insane to acknowledge his arrest because that way they would be bound to take the course of law against him
produce him in front of courts for justice... It is better this way if they don't announce the arrest of HVTs .... That way they interrogate them and kill them without a problem

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), however, has not confirmed the development as yet.

According to well informed sources, one of the key al Qaeda commanders, Mufti Zubair Marwat and his two guards Anwar and Faheem were also arrested with Rashid early in the morning on Thursday last week.

the guy I spoke to did confirm capturing a very high value target but refused to name him so I decided it was Adnan because his operation coincided with the news.
only time wil tell what actually happened

In all likelihood this is Adnan Rashid. The denials about him and assertions that this is an AQ operative may be a cover to deny the judiciary the opportunity to call for producing him in the courts if he stands to be a citizen of Pakistan (ala missing persons cases).

Secondly, Army does not have to produce these militants or have to capture them all to make this operation a success. The key success is to deny them space to operate from. If they left and moved over to Afghanistan, all the better for Pakistan.

Well said sir. Its my dream to see a lawful Pakistan under the writ of a capable government. We need to go away with letting tribals or Kashmiris control the country on the pretext of Azadi and security by themselves.

If they want their own control, do it under the Pakistan Army banner.

Assuming the capture was of some high level AQ target, would it be coincidence that the recent drone strike in NW successfully targeted (after a long time) important Al Qaeda operatives?

The al-Qaeda has confirmed that the recent US drone strikes had killed six of its leaders in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan, ...

... al-Qaeda leaders killed in drone strikes in Datta Khel also included Mustafa Abu Yazid, the chief operational commander of al-Qaeda and a close aide of Osama bin Laden, who had claimed responsibility for the 2007 murder of Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi. ...
