RIYADH: Visiting Pakistani State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar said on Sunday Islamabad could cooperate with the Kingdom in the field of agriculture.

Khar, who came to the Saudi capital on Saturday, held official talks the next day with Hamad Al-Bazei, deputy minister of finance.

During her discussions with Al-Bazei, she said that Pakistan has become self sufficient in wheat and could help fulfill Saudi Arabia’s needs.

Pakistan has the required land, manpower and other resources for viable wheat production, she told the vice minister. She added that her country is famous for the cultivation of citrus fruits and has been rated the world's fifth largest milk producer.

She also thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for his magnanimity in helping Pakistan when it was hit by natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes.

“The Pakistani government and its people are thankful for this royal gesture in helping the country in its reconstruction work following the natural disasters,” she said. Khar also held talks with her counterpart Nizar Obeid Madani, discussing matters of mutual interest and regional issues.

Ayaz Muhammad Khan, charge d' affaires of the Pakistan Embassy who was present at both ministerial discussions, told Arab News that the meetings were successful and that the two parties identified areas of cooperation where they could enhance bilateral relations.

He said that matters related to the Joint Ministerial Meeting and Joint Business Council were also discussed during the talks with Madani.

“The visit provided a useful opportunity to comprehensively review the status of bilateral relations and exchange views on several matters that are of interest to the two sides,” he said.

On Monday, Khan said the state minister was expected to meet some senior government officials in the Kingdom.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia enjoy close relations based on common values of faith, traditions and interests.
