Indonesia Plans 180 Flankers Plus F-16s | AVIATION WEEK

BEIJING — Indonesia intends to acquire 180 Sukhoi Flankers and also to buy Lockheed Martin F-16s, Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro says, setting out plans for a massive expansion of the Southeast Asian country’s air combat force.
If Indonesia is serious about buying 180 Flankers, then Canberra will almost certainly fund the Royal Australian Air Force’s plan for 100 Lockheed Martin F-35s, says Andrew Davies, an analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Until now, there was a significant chance that Australia would buy fewer F-35s.
The Sukhoi fleet will be built up by 2024, with 18 aircraft in each of 10 squadrons, Purnomo says. F-16s will replace BAE Systems Hawks, the government’s Antara news agency says in a report carrying Purnomo’s statement.
If the country does buy 180 Flankers and if it can operate them efficiently — two big ifs — then it will have transformed an air force that now has negligible combat capability.
Indonesia has been operating its current small force of Flankers, a mix of Su-27s and Su-30s, with poor levels of efficiency and availability. Analysts believe that its nine Northrop F-5s are in worse shape. Eight of 12 F-16As and Bs ordered in the 1980s are grounded.
The delivery of three Flankers this week took the force of that type to 10. The government previously said it would buy an additional six.
“To defend our nation’s sovereignty, we have set a target to procure 180 Sukhoi jet fighters to form 10 squadrons,” Purnomo reportedly says.
Besides Australia, the Indonesian buildup also would cause concerns in Singapore and Malaysia, according to Davies, although Leonard Sebastian, a Singapore-based specialist on Indonesia, thinks that Indonesia’s neighbors, including Australia, will not react too strongly.
The Indonesian air force is “pretty weak on human resources — not just the pilots but also the support personnel,” Sebastian says, doubting that the country could operate the Flanker force efficiently.
There is less doubt that it can buy them, he adds. Indonesia has been enjoying strong mineral prices stoked by Chinese demand. And building up the air force, rather than the army, would accord with the country’s policy of creating armed forces that are more technically advanced and professional.
The minister says the strength of the Indonesian economy is helping the government pay for its arms program.
Davies, who thinks Indonesia eventually will have a large number of Flankers but not as many as 180, points out that countries across Southeast Asia are focusing increasingly on advanced military technology.
Purnomo does not say how many F-16s Indonesia wants, but the country is operating six Hawk 100 trainers and 20 Hawk 200 light attack aircraft. Two years ago the government said it wanted to buy a squadron of F-16s between 2010 and 2014.
Any further F-16s may be secondhand. The defense ministry said in July that the U.S. was offering surplus fighters at low prices.
For imports of new weapons, Indonesia will insist on technology transfer and 40% of production work, Deputy Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin says.

Oh Yes! Im happy that at least they buying something for their military ...anywayz the Indonesians r not so fool as we think ...they r also working on themselves to develop tech at home regarding aircraft development ...and another thing sometimes person try to look fool but instead make otherz fool...so I hope every person has his reason to do whatever he is doing...Is most possible that they have very good reasons for whatever they doing for their AF under the present circumstances they facing... I hope and pray that they get something:pakistan: for the Muslim Ummah in their deal.......

It might have been a body blow to Pakistan to sell its JF-17s to Indonesia when they are planning for the combo of Flankers and Falcons, JF-17 simply doesn't accomodate the role specified by these two fighter jets of combining range, endurance, weapon package.

.
More F-16s americans deals with Saudis, Iraqis soon and the production line of F-16 going strong I am still skeptical of Indonesians going for the exact 180 flankers.

Certainly, since Indonesians have very poor track record of operating its airforce given above articles brief about the grounding of F-16s, poor efficiency of current fleet of Flankers. Indonesians seriously needs to put forth its current fleet in order before committing to massive Flanker fleet which it can ill effort given its poor track record as a operational airforce.

.
^That is why first the replacement of current old airframes will take place before Indonesians think about 180 extra flanker/vipers.
What would be the logical decision to replace F-5s/Hawks lets wait and watch.

Hi,

180 Flankers is a huge number for an air force like that. From mediocre to extraordinary airforce----what do they want to do. Just the transition in itself to such an aircraft is a big step for any airforce----and with numbers closing 200 is going to pose some serious threat to the neighbours.

Would the F35 do the job for the australians---maybe the U S will sell them the downgraded F 22's----. It is a game of one upmanship.

How are they going to muster up technical support staff and flyers---it must be a project stretched over a longer term.

A 100 flankers is understandable----but a 180---maybe a little too much.

why indonesia needs such a large airforce?

.
guys there's a difference between sale and offer.when offer is accepted then sale will be confirmed.so don't be so serious right now guys..still long way to go...by the way i think BD is considering jf-17 aswell.

. .
well it is good that indonesia will buy them they are less on these machines hrdely 20 fighter jets they have because of their poor economy as JF 17 would be best choice easy to maintain and in very low cost they can get F 16 equally matched perfomance of old F 16 which they have and they can build their airforce against growing singaprian airforce and onlt indonesia stugless in airforce in that region and hence they get it from their brothers pakistan and will get help if they buy them in war time from pakistan we will be more than happy to help our struggling brothers good work Ahmed mukhar your visit is not useless as visits of joint chief of staff
Indonesia will never go for jf17 they are interested in sukhois and there economy is not as bad as described they can afford f16 or hornet or sukhois...

Mig2
JF 17 is goood against low cost fighter jets likes of Mig 21 mig 29 and mirages im sure JF 17 is 100 times better than them and countries who wanna buy them asked the makes of them that we are getting half of your fighter jets price better fighter jet than yours why we buy your thats why french and russians got in panic and thats why they saying that they are loosing markets and want to put engine deal off from russian and avionic deal off from french but no one now stop JF 17 because even with chinese stuff it is as good as it is with western but 2 percent difference will be their which i dont think so that much
Mig29 is not a cheap nor comparable to jf17 or mig21 also Mirage is not in this category
