Pakistan needs Musharraf in 2 offices: Arbab
By Shahzad Raza
ISLAMABAD: The international situation requires that President General Pervez Musharraf keep both offices (the presidency and chief of army staff) beyond 2007, said Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim on Sunday.
The international situation does not favour the country and Musharraf has to keep both offices, Arbab told reporters in the Parliament lobby. There had been politicians in the past who had kept two office during their time, he said. ââ¬ÅThere is no harm in a person holding more than one office.ââ¬Â
Shaukat Azizââ¬â¢s performance as prime minister had been excellent and he should be reelected in the 2007 elections, said the chief minister. Pakistan Muslim League leaders will nominate the partyââ¬â¢s candidate for prime minister, he said. He added that he was willing to offer Shaukat Aziz many more Sindhi constituencies to contest the 2007 elections.
He rejected the oppositionââ¬â¢s demand of establishing an interim government to hold elections. ââ¬ÅThe opposition usually makes such demands,ââ¬Â he said, adding that the current assemblies would complete their five-year tenures.
Former prime minister Zafarullah Jamaliââ¬â¢s suggestion of dividing Punjab into three provinces was right ââ¬â if the provinceââ¬â¢s people agreed, said Arbab. He said the current assemblies could elect President Musharraf for another term provided the general elections are held in 2008. There is no role for Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari in Pakistanââ¬â¢s politics, he added.
He said there was no constitutional condition saying that an interim government must be formed three months before general elections.
