‘Pakistan needs democracy for economic revival’
Monday, March 19, 2012
Karachi

Drawing parallels between the economic success of South Korea and Bangladesh at a workshop held at Karachi University, it was stated that institutionalisation of a democratic political system in the country like that found in South Korea, would also result in an economic revival.

The workshop titled ‘The contemporary western model of governance: a comparison between the success stories in Southeast Asia and the Far East and the Struggling polities of South Asia’ was organised by the university’s Area Study Centre for Europe on Saturday.

One of the speakers, Samar Hassan of the Habib University Foundation presented a paper, comparing Pakistan and Bangladesh to the South Korean model of governance. She said in case of South Korea, modernisation and development was followed by democracy, which led to the “miraculous economic expansion of the country, taking it to new heights of success”.

“Therefore if Pakistan wants to achieve its goal of sustainable economic growth, it must also institutionalise liberal democracy.” Bilal Ahmed of the Pakistan Institute of Labour, Education and Research also shared his views and stressed the need to develop Karachi into the country’s largest commercial hub as it was the most important step to achieving economic freedom.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Ghulam Murtuza Khoso of Sindh University and Mohammad Asif Iqbal from the Social Policy and Development Centre, Karachi. Former Foreign Secretary Najmuddin Sheikh chaired the session.
Korea, not China, is Pakistan's model for development.

Pakistan once was a model for South Korea however Korea is not the model unlike Korea Pakistan needs to get rid of extremism first, It's stupid if you think Others would follow China's model it's not sustainable and also it needs reform. Korea is not the Model, there is no model. but getting rid of extremism and corruption.

pakistan is in a jinx. doesnt matter democracy or communism. a good leader and a stable govt is what pak needs for prosperity. unfortunately india will try its best to never let that happen by supporting bla and stuff. although i want a stable pak but it just has too many problems

'Pakistan needs democracy for economic revival'

That's a joke, Democracy in Pakistan has only seen the most corrupt men in Pakistan's history take power and loot the nation and its people.

Democratically elected person's don't make reforms, neither do they launch major energy projects because they know it would be of no use if their term is only going to last a few years, so instead they spend that time looting the nation and stuffing their pockets with money as much as possible.

there is no model. but getting rid of extremism and corruption.

Korea, not China, is Pakistan's model for development.

Our main models are Turkey and Malaysia. But keep in mind our problems are very different to the rest of the world; terrorism, polarised society, intra-provincial conflicts, US plaguing our western front, threat on the eastern front, weak economy and literacy rate, heavy corruption and most problematic off all, nuclear weapons. So long we have those curses (the nukes), yeah I call them curses, we'll be plagued by countries like Israel and the US in one form or another.

But (South) Korea is a great model I do agree

Turkey's not a good model (no offense to the Turks). I would say we follow the model of Sweden, and Denmark. These countries, while may not have surprising economic growth, have good achievments and standards of livings with decent growth - which is all what we need.

It's quite sad. Once, we offered South Korea to be modeled after us (The Karachi plan during South Korea's depression - they are still using it!), now we are thinking of modeling ourselves after them..

Pakistan just cannot stay in its current state and must take an Indian style economic reform. The booming economy in India will further segregate the military power between Pakistan and India, where it is no longer possible for Pakistan to catch up to Indian military might in coming years. While Pakistan must do with downgraded F-16s and JF-17s, India is buying hundreds of Rafales, PAK-FAs, and Super Flankers.

Just for the purpose of preserving Pakistan's sovereignty, Pakistan must embrace democracy and an economic reform. A booming economy is the best way to combat radicalism that has held Pakistan back for two decades. India can do it, why can Pakistan not?

as an indian i know that we dont want see a rising pakistan. but we want to see a stable pakistan something like sri lanka and bangladesh. a country that doesnt pose threat to us economically.till now we have been very successfull with help of america ofcourse  and pakistan's own economic and political blunders. what pakistan needs is a revolutionary leader. get rid of terrorism crush the bla and start economy. ur inflation is crossing 30%, production is all time low and economy growth rate is extremely low. pakistan needs to gain confidence of investers.

The War in Afghanistan is draining pakistan once that ends it can start, pakistan is a democracy get that through your head it's just corrupt. getting rid of corruption and extremism should be the key issues.

What Erdogan did with Turkey what rather inspirable, that's what I'm talking about. But really, there's no country in the world that we look at and say "Hey, they used to be like us!". Models like Sweden (the whole of Scandinavia really) and Switzerland are way off; those countries are way too different from our current state.

@Korean: Pakistan is a democracy, just an effed up one

india type economic reforms requires india type leaders and thinkers, they have imran khan, he is a cricketer and a good speech giver not an economist. dont expect much from him on economic front.

What Pakistan needs is a Autocracy headed by a group of highly patriotic, nationalist, intelligent, and experienced people who only look after Pakistan's interests and know what they are doing, not to mention good at their job.

Anyway Turkey is no Model Unless Pakistan wants to get rid of it's islamic identity look at malaysia it's balances both Islam and Secularism I've stated this with Egypt, Malaysia is the Muslim Malays follow islamic law while non muslims don't it's been relatively successful however not one model can be used build off Malaysia.
