Arabian Sea - Continuing to enhance its fighting capabilities and maintain the minimum deterrence, the Pakistan Navy would commission the fourth F-22P Frigate being built in collaboration with China and two latest fast attack craft within a year reported.

The F-22P, a multi-mission conventionally-powered frigate, is being built at Pakistan Shipyard. Under the deal with China, the PNS Aslat (the name of sword) will be inducted by April 2013, said an official of Pakistan Navy during a briefing onboard PNS Shamsheer.

The deal involved four F-22P frigates, six Harbin Z-9EC helicopters (already delivered to Pakistan Navy) and ammunition for the frigates. The first of the frigates, PNS Zulifqar, was delivered in September 2009, second PNS Shamsheer in 2010 and the third PNS Saif was handed over to Pakistan Navy in February 2011. An official of the 18th Destroyer Squadron said that Pakistan Navy with the available strength was fully capable of defending the country’s coastal line effectively.

Vice Admiral (retd) Ahmed Tasneem who was commander of submarine ‘Hangor’, which destroyed India’s warship ‘Kukri’ in 1971 said although Pakistan Navy with minimum resources was maintaining higher professional standards but they needed to acquire more surface ships and submarines. The F-22P’s hull contains China’s type 054 frigate’s radar cross-section reduction, which helps prevent detection by radars mounted on other ships, aircraft and anti-ship missiles.

Although the Aquisition was slow but its a fact that the PN should continue the production of F-22Ps like instead of 4th the should have gone for the 4th and 5th one. More over looking towards further development of this class by utilizing newer technologies being developed by Chinese recently and some of those used in Type-54As, then going for another 5 for such class which would be build in Pakistan and further 5 in coming future. In this way we would have 15 Frigates along with other equipment.

I think PN should work on with Chinese over the modernization of this F-22P types with latest technology and try to produce 3 F-22Ps batches in every five years time and continue to produce about 9 in coming 15 years along with the 4 we have. Try to get rid of OHPs along with selling the Type-21s to other countries who are interested in it.
