Muscat: Omani Navy officers are welcome to train with the Pakistan Navy, according to Commodore Mohammed Shuaib, Commander of the 9th Auxiliary and Mine Warfare Squadron of the Pakistan Navy, who is commanding a three-day goodwill and training visit to the Sultanate.

Commodore Shuaib said that given the historical role of Pakistan in training Omani officers and the good relations between the countries, Omanis are welcome to train in Pakistan.

“We do not have too many Omani trainees in Pakistan, but we expect to have more in the future. Our doors are open to them, so whenever a request is made by the brotherly country of Oman, we will be pleased to entertain it. We have been training many officers and sailors in the Gulf region and we wish to continue that,” he said.

Two Pakistan Navy ships, PNS Rahnaward and PMSS Nusrat, arrived here at Port Sultan Qaboos on Sunday on a visit to boost bilateral cooperation and share their expertise and experiences with Omani officials.

PNS Rahnaward is a Brig class tall ship, serving as a sail training vessel for young sailors and officers of the Pakistan Navy. The ship is being commanded by Commander Omer Khayyam. PNS Nusrat is an offshore patrol vessel of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) and is being commanded by Commander Tanveer Shahid.
“The visit is aimed at improving interoperability, strengthening bilateral ties and learning from each other’s

experiences. The crew on the visiting ships will have professional interactions with the personnel of the Royal Oman Police Coastguard and the Royal Navy of Oman,” said Captain Altaf Hussain, Defence Attache at the Embassy of Pakistan.

Commodore Shuaib noted that as this is a training mission, the Pakistan Navy will conduct exercises with the Shabab Oman 2 vessel. “We have also invited the Royal Oman Police Coastguard to carry out drills on our Nusrat ship,” he said.

Shuaib added that Oman and Pakistan cooperate in the fight against illegal activities at sea, in a bid to assist trade in the region.

“Unless you have collaborative arrangements between the countries, Oman, Pakistan or any other country, we won’t be able to keep a check on illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, and illegal fishing. We are cooperating in this matter to facilitate trade in the area,” he said.

Commodore Shuaib noted that interaction with the ROP Coastguard is aimed at organising trainings, seminars and exchange visits, as well as increasing cooperation between the Pakistani Maritime Security and ROP Coastguard. “This will enhance the capacity of both countries, foster mutual understanding, and enhance interoperability,” he said.

Speaking about Pakistan’s role in helping Oman fight drug trafficking, he said that “despite our resource constraints, our contribution to fighting drug trafficking, piracy and illegal criminal activities at sea has been phenomenal.”

Shuaib noted that as Pakistan is part of the international combined maritime forces for anti-piracy and terrorism, it is playing an important role. “We are probably the only country outside NATO that has commanded these two forces, seven and eight times. Other than the Americans, we have the highest contribution of ships and aircraft in the Gulf of Aden and close to the Omani coast, in cooperation with Oman,” he said.

He added that more operations are planned in the near future.

“We have two ships operating right now in the Gulf of Aden. That is how we contribute to anti-piracy, anti-drug smuggling and other illegal activities. We are planning to hold another command term of the combined maritime forces in July or in August for counter-terrorism and maritime security operations,” he said.

and still indians have massive influence over them......even their navy has a listening post there.;)

What influence homie? They claim that they have sold Insas to Oman.. lol .. Yet the Omani aren't using any... They claim to have a "listening post" there and yet at max they have berthing rights on Omani port.. Apart from Baloch in their military .. 35+% of that country's population is of Pakistani origin.. Their soldiers, officers,SF all come to Pak for training .. Apart from employing Ex Pak servicemen.

Oman have strategic importance from our perspective but unfortunately none of our government ever tried to convert existing opportunities & bilateral relations into Strategic bonding between both countries.

Can you explain this strategic importance?

How do you suggest they do that?

We can keep stronger eye on Arabean Sea Region by having stronger ties with Oman. We need to have greater control first to delink India with Chahbahar, in case of conflict and second to stop smugling or piracy in the region (RAW agents, etc as well)

Exactly what other states do to have good foreign relationships with any other state ... mean they find common grounds & build their relations on these foundations .... we are no different nor there is a need to do anything different .... just built common foundations for strong bilateral relations

do we have any sizable economic relations with Oman ... ??
No

Do any of these state offer any incentive to do business with each other .... ??
at least i am not aware of any incentive .... any other one who can update at this front ... ??

if I am not mistaken in Oman's GDP Agriculture contributes less than 3% & we have an economy where Agriculture contributes around 25-28 % ... the very basic thing which we can do is to try to get some share in FOOD Imports of Oman ....

do we have any people to people relations with Oman .... other than in some packet of Makran coast ... ??
No

Do we have any bilateral projects in Economy & Social sector .... ??
other than Pak-Oman joint Investment company & Micro Finance bank ... I am not aware of any other project ...

Do we have any Roadmap of common future threats or objective .... ???
I don't think so .... heck we don't even teach our children that Oman is also a 'Neighbouring Country' just across the Arabian Sea .... how many of the Pakistani people are aware that Musqat is around 400 Km from Gawadar ..... while Karachi is around 450+ KM from Gawadar .....

Oman is the only GCC country with which we can have strong relations without facing the allegation of joining the Pro-Saudi or Anti-Iranian camp .... other than this Oman is a reasonably stable & peaceful country though shares border with Yemen .... its stability at political & social level could become the cornerstone for our policy in Gulf of Oman (specially in the context of Gwadar) & for Middle east in broader context ....

All we have is some relation at Military level and that's it ....

I can hardly believe what u have written maybe for GCC it maybe true but not for a country like oman. Anyways if true then lets go towards strategic points, that gas deal with hindus which was suppose to come from iran in oman to india etc that only because of our EEZ's extension got scuttled. But the very fact that the omanies agreed to facilitate india is a massive concern. Plus that Sultan of their is pro indian since his educational background is indian. and he facilitates them alot.

Plus omani forces go to india for training im not sure if they me to Pakistan regularly specially in navy.
