ISLAMABAD: (APP) Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will visit Karachi on Friday to attend as chief guest the launching ceremony of a major warship of Pakistan Navy (17000 Ton) Fleet Tanker to be held at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW).

This Fleet Tanker has been built in collaboration with M/s STM of Turkey under the ambit of the Ministry of Defence Production and Pakistan Navy.

Pakistan Navy Fleet Tanker will play an important role in catering to the needs of Pakistan Navy in meeting its logistic needs, a statement issued from the Prime Minister’s Office here said.

The Fleet Tanker is a true testament of Pakistan’s efforts towards indigenization and self-reliance, and enhanced collaboration with its brothers in Turkey.

The design of this ship by Turkey and its construction by Pakistan’s skilled manpower at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW), manifest an excellent combination to achieve indigenization through joint ventures with brotherly countries.

The design of PN Fleet Tanker (PNFT) is based on contemporary trends and is according to Bureau Veritas Rules for the Classification of Naval Ships.

Double hull design will provide PNFT with unrestricted entry into any port of the world.
Pakistan and Turkey are time tested friends. Joint ventures like construction of this Fleet Tanker will further strengthen our mutual bonds characterized by faith, common heritage, shared civilization, and commonality of interests.

This initiative will certainly open more opportunities for further cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey in the field of indigenous warship construction and other defense sector products.

Launching of this ship, two months ahead of the schedule, is indeed a gift from the brotherly people and the government of Turkey to the nation on its Independence Day celebrations, the statement concluded.

Karachi Shipyard is presently building 17000 tons Fleet Tanker for Pakistan Navy. The construction of the vessel started on 27 November 2013 with steel cutting and subsequently keel laying was performed on 7 March 2014. The construction of the vessel is progressing rapidly and will be launched by mid 2016.

PNFT will provide not only logistic support to PN units at high seas but can also undertake ASW/ASvW operation through embarked helicopter. PNFT will be built under the Class and will comply with IMO and MARPOL regulations envogue. For this, the ship is of double hull configuration. It is propelled by two diesel driven engines with controllable pitch propeller and can achieve a top speed of 20 knots. There are 4 x DGs for electrical power generation. With overall length of 158.4 m and maximum width of 22.0 m, the ship has scantling displacement of 17000 tons.

Contract for indigenous construction of a Fleet Tanker for Pakistan Navy was signed on 22 Jan 2013 between Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP), Pakistan and M/s STM of Turkey. As per the said contract, design of the ship alongwith Kit of Material (KoM) will be provided by M/s STM, whereas complete construction, outfitting, and trials will be undertaken by KS&EW. PN Fleet Tanker (PNFT) is the largest warship to be built in country to date.

Clearly type 21 frigate under going maintanance
It is Alamgir, OHP class, not a Type 21.

We have 2 tankers currently, Nasr and Moawin, for 2 frigate squadrons. Maybe PNS Moawin (being the older one) will be decommissioned at the commissioning of the new tanker.
