Shahbaz lauds role of TEVTA in upgrading technical skills of youth, announces interest-free loans for four thousand skilled youth

The youth is the future of Pakistan and it is the government’s responsibility to make future of the country and the nation bright, said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif while addressing the inaugural ceremony of 2-day Skills Expo and Job Fair- 2015 arranged by Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) at Lahore International Expo Centre on Saturday.

Provincial ministers Muhammad Shafiq, Raja Ashfaq Sarwar, Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, secretaries Labour, Industry, Information, Punjab Skills Development Fund chief executive, consul generals of America and China, TEVTA Chairman Irfan Qaiser Sheikh and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

Shahbaz announced to give interest-free loan worth Rs 75,000 each to four thousand skilled youth.

He said that these loans will be distributed among skilled youth completing training with the collaboration of TEVTA and Akhuwat for which Rs 500 million have been allocated.

“The aim of this excellent programme is to provide honourable jobs to the skillful youth,” he said, adding that the provision of resources for empowering youth through technical training is a useful investment and good news of bright future.

He said that development goals cannot be achieved without empowering youth comprising 60 percent population.

He said that TEVTA is playing an important role for preparing skilled manpower as per the market needs and promotion of technical education. He said that there will be revolution of skill development to the efforts of this institution.

He said that holding of skills expo by TEVTA is an excellent step and this is the first and unique programme of its kind in the last seven years. He congratulated minister for industry, TEVTA chairman, secretary Industry, board of governors of TEVTA, trainers, master trainers and the students for holding the expo. He said that the institutions like TEVTA, PVTC and Skill Development Company are playing effective role in preparing skilled manpower and their programmes fully reflect vision of the government.

The chief minister said that the government is paying special attention to skill development and this exhibition will be helpful in preparing skilled manpower.

“Instead of spending money on buildings, equipping the male and female students with technical education is the vision of the government and this is the only way to take Pakistan forward,” he said, adding that image of the country will be enhanced by making the youth skilled in agriculture, industry and other sectors according to the market demands and TEVTA is working most effectively in this regard.

He said that preparation of manpower with quality training is of great importance for the stability of the country and achieving the production targets. He said that more skilled manpower will be helpful for strengthening the economy. He said that it was impression in the past that big population increases problems, create hindrance in the development, however, although 60 percent population of the country comprising youth is a big challenge yet we have to change this challenge into opportunity and move forward by accepting this challenge.

He said that youth will be empowered through vocational training programmes and Pakistan will be put on the road to progress and prosperity. He said that there has been no coordinated contact of industry, agriculture and other sectors of economic development with the vocational training institutions in the history of the country and all matters have been dealt individually due to which skilled force could not be prepared according to the market requirements.

There are vocational training institutes (public and private) and quite a few vocational training initiatives (again....both public and private) in Pakistan - How efficacious they are is an entirely different and depressing matter.
Here in India there is a concept of Industrial Training Institutes (or ITI) where students having completed class 10 studies can enroll for vocational training and learn several trades like motor mechanic, refrigeration cycle repair, machinist, electrical repair etc.

The course is mostly practical based and the person coming out of this course can easily find work.
Service sector is booming in India at this moment and there is a huge demand for such personnel in industry. ITIs don't cost a big amount to establish and run (compared to engineering colleges) and therefore if we are talking about creating a large pool of such technically qualified personnel, its a very cost effective manner.
The courses are hugely popular and there is a sizeable participation of women candidates too.

I'm not sure how technical education on this level is managed in Pakistan, but surely this method, primarily for its simplicity can surely work in Pakistan too. It is difficult for government to provide jobs for all, but with these type of courses, you can actually encourage entrepreneurship, improving job situation for youth.
Why don't we just send people to india for training problem solved ,
Good Idea! It can help if not completely solve the problem completely.
right after they get degree they can become ISI agents
Bad Idea. Besides i'm not sure they offer any spy courses :D

A mega-B/S program. Will add millions to India's unemployed educated youth.

I can't understand this antipathy to nawaz sharif. Since he took over economic growth is finally reviving, power situation seems to be improving, terrorism declining, he signed the chinese corridor, he kept Pak out of the Saudi war. I think he has been one of the most effective leaders.....so can't understand this hate towards him.

-vote rigging.
-economic stats rigging : Fudged wheat figures feed GDP - Pakistan - DAWN.COM
-large sums spent on financially unsustainable metro bus projects.
-rigging chicken prices through hatchery cartel (even the competition commission pointed that out). Even though no official has explicitly stated NS and family is involved, but it's an open secret in the poultry industry.
-selling profitable stake in HBL as part of privatization program but keeping loss making PIA, Steel Mill and railway still state owned. Plus introducing more and more state run enterprises that are going into loss/subsidized(such as metro bus). So what exactly do they want to do ? They want to privatize state run enterprises or not ? They should be selling the loss making ones the first, but they didn't.
-Put a ban on all new renewable energy projects.
-raising tax rates.
-artificially lowered usd rate in market causing serious problems for the export based industry.
-latest yellow cab scheme, look it up. Pakistan on an average year produces ~150k cars per year and has roughly almost 2 million registered cars. Do you think an addition of 50,000 taxis at a massive cost of ~25 billion ruppees ($250m) is something reasonable?
-Supporting lashkar-e-jhangvi, sipah-e-sahaba, ASWJ etc etc. These are known terrorist organizations involved in some very serious $hit....
-there are many other things that other members can point out.

Most of what you quote are minor corruption charges, no doubt the guy is corrupt, OK very corrupt, but then so is the entire legislature. You cannot expect a pussy cat to lead a den of hyenas.

Raising tax rates was something that had to be done, tax collection in Pakistan is very low and it was part of the IMF conditions, tax revenue had to go up. He cannot make the rich and the landlords pay taxes. politics being the art of the possible, he increased taxes on those he could.

Some charges are more serious like manipulating Pak currency for personal gain and vote rigging, but I suspect all parties rig votes when they get an opportunity and as for currency manipulation, do you have proof or is this just an urban myth? It is not easy to do and as the PM there are surely easier ways of making money than spitting in your own plate.

My point is that I can't remember a leader in recent history that has had more success than nawaz and yet pakistanis all hate him. Who would you rather have, Bilawal Bhutto? That the guy is even under consideration as a leader of 200 million people is a joke. IK ? Let him actually show some results in the province that he rules, so far he is all talk and no delivery. Musharraf? During his tenure he received unprecedented amounts of aid which was frittered away in construction projects and consumer goods.

The highest tax brackets have gone up and new higher income tax brackets have been introduced. The rich have been taxed more, he IS making the rich pay more taxes. Being a libertarian I'm against all taxes, especially progressive taxation. I want a tax minimization policy where a government's efficiency is judged by how little money it needs to run.

IMF loans were unnecessary, Pakistan had enough reserves to keep going without the loans. They never needed to borrow.

The currency is not being manipulated for personal gain directly (you must be referring to what happened more than 1.5 decade ago). It is a lollipop for the people to suck on. They show off that in just one year they brought dollar from rs.110/$ to rs.100/$. And as usual people are completely uneducated about economics and they think something good has happened. As far as proof is concerned, State bank of pakistan controls the exchange rate, pakistan does not have a freely floating currency. They injected something like $50m into the market to bring the rate down. You can search on google, you might find an article on dawn.com. This is not stealing from the nation or anything, this is just bad economic policy.

On the occasion of the World Youth Skill Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches Skill India Programme from Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

Here are the highlights of his speech:
  • Today the world is celebrating World Youth Skills Day and we are also contributing to the same.
  • Every poor Indian is my soldier. I have to win the war of over poverty with them.
  • Skills not only puts money in your pocket, it gives you self-confidence.
  • This mission is for those people who are left behind. And who are these people? People with money aren't left behind, these are the poor.
  • This initiative is not merely to fill pockets but to bring a sense of self-confidence among the poor.
  • 65 per cent of the Indian population is under the age of 35. And if they don't have skill, they will become a challenge for us rather than an opportunity.
  • Through this mission we want to fulfil dreams of people and we want to do it in a structured way, taking states together.
  • We have to create structures and mechanisms to nurture youngsters, enabling them to find employment.
  • We want that a person should be capable of multiple activities (skills).
  • We have not restricted ourselves to skill development, we've focused on entrepreneurship.
  • We want to give opportunities to apprentices who want to become entrepreneurs.
  • We have to make all our training institutions dynamic. Technology is changing so rapidly that it is necessary to be dynamic to remain relevant.
  • We have to map the strategy for the next 10 years of development.
  • We have to have a futuristic vision, need to think what technology will be there in the next 10 years.
  • Matching job creation with industry demand is the key to end unemployment.
I congratulate Rajiv Pratap Rudy and his team for the manner in which they've taken this ahead.
