UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan lost its bid Tuesday to be re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council when its current term ends this year. It polled just 105 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.

Pakistan was considering running for the Council's presidency next year, according to diplomatic sources, and had been putting out feelers. The defeat deals Islamabad a diplomatic set-back as it seeks to burnish its international reputation.

Islamabad ran for one of the five slots this year for Asian and Pacific nations on the Council for which there were seven contestants.

United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea and the Philippines were elected from the Asia-Pacific region to serve a three-year terms. Laos was the other country to lose the election.

A total of 18 countries were elected on Tuesday representing the various regions.

The Human Rights Council is considered the second most important body in

the UN after the Security Council.

The Council has 47 members elected by the General Assembly and it is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights around the world and dealing with violations.

India is a member of the Council and was reelected last year to another term on the Council.

Pakistan not elected and KSA elected to UNHRC?

Money wins once again.

One should question tje legitimacy of UN when middle eastern nations get elected to UNHRC.

I think the Pakistani diplomats failed, they should have created more awareness amongst the other members.

UNHRC is a joke

It has been so irredeemably manipulated and destroyed by the US and Friends that it is an entirely useless organization. US support is why Saudi Arabia of all countries somehow landed a seat.

Some people were all praises, when Dr Maleeha Lodhi was elected as Pak permanent representative at UN, saying she is a distinguished diplomat and what not.... She could not even lobby properly for Pakistan at UN... Our foreign office is highly incompetent and useless.... Good for nothing

Pakistan Was a a Memeber in 2006-2008 Cycle , Then 2008-2011 Cycle, (no member may occupy a seat for more than two consecutive terms) So with the Gap of One Year 2011 It got elected for 2012-2015 Cycle ..

Considering the Seats are Won based on mutual arrangement (You scratch my Back & i scratch Yours) .... I am amazed we were able to get 3 Back to Back Seats ?
It is way too much optimistic to hope for Four Terms (which I guess Pakistan given the track record can still get Next Election a Year later)...

what a Load of Baloney ... as If Being a Member or a President would make us 5 Star in Worlds eye, or FDI will statrt pouring in ...

What i m More interested in to Know is WHAT Pakistan have done being a member for Past 3 Terms with Respect to Kashmir, Palestine (Israel), Burma, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan & Refugee issue ????

If THREE terms didn't bring any good .. what good can 4th do except a guy in a suit get to stay 3 More years in USA .... It is Just another UN Farce committee ... Member or Not .. Boo - Frikin - Ho !
