Viper was also an early contender as a name for the F-16(thanks to Battlestar Galactica). They couldn't call it the falcon because that name was taken by the Mirage manufacturer's business jet Dassualt Falcon. So General Dynamics had to settle with Fighting Falcon officially and Viper unofficially

yeah the story goes that PAF had mastered some maneuvers which the Falcon was not designed for and thus they had to redo the name.

Maybe you can shed some light as to why the Rafale was not called Mirage 5000 or 6000. Dassualt had good run with that name. They should have kept it.
