What's new

Pakistan is in the process of developing its own nuclear submarine

Yes but stealth and other advantages of nuclear propulsion can't be ignored.

Biggest disadvantage of an SSK with SLBMs is short range due to weight of ballistic missiles that the sub would have to carry around. SSK could barely move around 200nm on battery power; add weight of an SLBM and it would be a miracle if they could move even 20nm. This means that they have to keep operating their noisy diesel engine all the time and even then their range would be very short due to extra load they would be dragging along with them.

6 years ago this thread was created and now we still don't have ssbn or slbm.

. . . .
Yeah, no one believed that
we need nuclear SSBN & SLBM..... we also need H-Bombs.... we need so much we have so little.... We need more nukes currently a tiny stockpile of 120

It took the Indian navy a good 10-15 years to get the Arihant into the sea
indian 10-15 years = rest of the world 4-5 years
case in point "Tejas"

a nuke sub is very very big thing
Brilliant argument. Summed up all the technical, economic and logistic difficulties in achieving nuclear propulsion capability for subs. You should write for Jane's. O wait you already have a job a DRDO.

See the thing is, unlike the Indians or even Americans for this matter, who inflate the cost of weapons dev. programs into billions of dollars, Our boys are aware that their budget and options are limited. So staying true to the cause minus the bureaucratic corruption, they always aim to minimise the cost while still achieving their targets. Im sure if the JF17 was developed by any other country, its cost would've been in billions of dollars instead of a mere $500 million. So please don't doubt our potential. Just like the JFs, AL Khalid, Missiles and the A Bomb, we will get the Nuclear Subs as well. Because it is our need as part of the full spectrum Nuclear deterrent. 2nd strike is a must. Our boys know it. We know out. And when our military need a capability, the do always get, even in the face of Embargoes.

So Don't worry.. Money won't be an obstacle.. Our N-Subs are on their way, just a matter of a few years. We like to take the world by surprise. ;-] :pakistan:;)

Do you know how much a nuclear submarine cost, this was not a hateful comment but a reality check. Dont compare the capabilities of the IN with the PN, they are ages apart. Just to give you an idea about the cost of a nuclear submarine, please read -

The National Defense Authorization Act for FY 1996 preserved the third Seawolf nuclear attack submarine, though it funded SSN-23 at a lower level ($674.5 million) than the White House originally requested ($1.3736 billion). The estimated total cost for the three Seawolf class submarines is $13.1243 billion, or roughly $4.4 billion per submarine. (Source: Department of Defense Selected Acquisition Reports, Program Acquisition Cost Summary, March 31, 1996.)

The Virginia-class subs cost lower than the Seawolf, which were priced at around $1.85 billion each, the GAO found the Navy is not likely to meet that goal due to unrealistic program cost estimates. So far, the initial estimated average unit cost for the first three Virginia-class submarines is $2.1 billion.

INS Arihant cost $US2.9 billion (Rs. 13,966 Crore) and thats not including ongoing maintenance cost.

PN does not currently have the capability to logistically or financially support a nuclear submarine. If money was the only question then most countries would be maintaining one. It took the Indian navy a good 10-15 years to get the Arihant into the sea and by that standards keeping in mind IN huge logistical advantage it will take the PN atleast 10 years more to get even close to one.

As far as leasing one goes, the chances are very remote and way to many variable involved. China will not be very keen to just lease one away like that keeping in mind Pakistan's proximity to the Americans. Again even materializing a lease would take 5-10 years. Such deals dont happen overnight.

And these are 1996 estimates that included all the other cost that come with acquiring a nuclear submarine. You just dont buy one and put in into the see and forget about it. This is a god damn Nuclear Submarine not a fishing boat.

Pakistan getting a nuclear sub is just a matter of time and nothing else. Our higher ups are probably waiting for the right time to unveil their masterpiece.
And I am saying this on the basis of confirmed statements.
An friend's uncle is pretty high up in the PN hierarchy. He confirms that such a project exists and is going on.
And a friend at PIEAS also confirms that all ongoing research at Masters and PhD level is directed towards the development of nuclear submarines.
Their is no need to mention it publicly.

.
I think developing SLVs is a higher priority !

& it's much cheaper...

. .
There are official remarks and intentions about Nuclear submarines for PN.
I am certain work is silently continued and will something be out in near future.
Most probably by 2020-2022

And what makes you a mind reader ?? huh or do you even know what you are talking about? don't be sure of your self when the suprise comes in to play then your gov will cry to the world again. I don't think Pakistan (PN) is 10 to 15 years away in your crazy thinking perhaps a few years and again this is if they want to make these subs plzz give a rest to the hateful comments :disagree:

Yeh, Indians used to say the same thing about our nuke programme and JF17. When it hit them like a bolt they went running to complain to their colonial masters.
