Pakistan, India upgrade warheads despite disarmament trend: report
By AFP
Published: June 15, 2015

STOCKHOLM: The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute on Monday found that Pakistan and India, among others, were nuclear states which continued to increase their arsenals despite the international trend towards disarmament.

Between 2010 and 2015 the number of warheads fell from 22,600 to 15,850 according to the institute’s annual disarmament report which said the US and Russia represented the bulk of the reduction.

The institute also pointed to “extensive and expensive long-term modernisation programmes” in the world’s two largest nuclear powers which account for 90 per cent of the weapons.

“Despite renewed international interest in prioritizing nuclear disarmament, the modernization programmes under way in the nuclear weapon-possessing states suggests that none of them will give up their nuclear arsenals in the foreseeable future,” SIPRI researcher Shannon Kile said in a statement.

The other three nuclear armed states legally recognised by the 1968 Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty — China (260 warheads), France (300 warheads), Britain (215 warheads) — are “either developing or deploying new nuclear weapon systems or have announced their intention to do so” according to the Stockholm-based peace institute.

China was the only state among the five global nuclear powers to have a “modest” increase in the size of its arsenal.

The report found that while the remaining nuclear states — India (90 to 100 warheads), Pakistan (100 to 120 warheads) and Israel (80 warheads) — have considerably smaller stockpiles, both India and Pakistan continue to increase their arsenals while Israel has tested long-range ballistic missiles.

North Korea is believed to be developing its arsenal of six to eight warheads but SIPRI said “technical progress” was difficult to assess.

Reliable information on nuclear stockpiles varied greatly between states with the US getting top marks for transparency in the report, while Britain and France were more restrictive and Russia divulged nothing officially, except in bilateral contacts with the US.

In Asia, China revealed little about its arsenal and the only information made public by nuclear rivals India and Pakistan was announcements of missile tests.

The five nuclear powers and members of the UN Security Council — US, Russia, China, Britain and France — along with Germany, are in ongoing talks with Iran to persuade the Islamic Republic not to develop nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.

We are doing right thing we should increase both quality and quantity of our nukes.

They have been stuck on these numbers for 5 years to say the least....... and then they say we continue to increase......

I think it will only take one to wreck both sides. Considering the yields that both sides possess i would say one might be obliterated but the other will face life worse than death from the fall out. Numbers are just for show.

Agree with u, actual figure of nukes is highly classified no body knows they are just Assumptions...! i guess that Pakistan would have arround 200 Nukes are same amount i suppose for India

Nukes remain always last option and are very destructive and As Indo-Pak are increasing the numbers, The Risk factor is also increasing, people have to understand it.

That is the Hypocrisy that west is know for :)
With over THOUSANDS of warheads US takes credit for reducing stockpile as the have decommissioned 150 warheads from a stock of 7000 while the other nations are blamed for adding 10 warheads to there sock of only 100. :) All this considering the fact that you rightly pointed that west have been mentioning the number 100 to 120 for about a decade now and every year they say we have increased the arsenal to 120 or so, keeping the 20 figure constant,

Disarment Trend?
US-7000/Russia-5000 alone
What a trend sir jee.

Right! I've been hearing this stockpile level since 2010!! So there's actually no increase. It's nothing but sensationalism.

By the way how do these guys know the number of warheads? Have they physically counted them? Nope! It's top secret. So, it's just plain guesswork.

That shows these guys have no clue about our inventory....... they have been quoting some unknown source to state the numbers......

Exactly that being said do we have idea of how large pur inventory is

That's why we need to excersie restraint & ensure that such weapons are never used

All you need is about 50 warheads. That should cover the world. I don't understand why there is a need to build more than that. Seems like a waste of money. If you don't have a western advanced economy then you are starving your children for a few extra nukes.
