Pakistan increases security for former minister Sherry Rehman

Pakistani authorities on Wednesday increased security for former minister Sherry Rehman, a vocal critic of the country's blasphemy law, in the wake of the assassination of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer for opposing the controversial statute.

The number of policemen deputed to guard Rehman's home in Karachi was increased.

Security cover for Rehman was increased on the order of the Karachi police chief, officials said.

Taseer was gunned down in a market in Islamabad by one of his guards, who said he was angered by the governor's criticism of the blasphemy law.

Taseer had backed calls to repeal or reform the law and spoken out in the defence of a Christian woman sentenced to death for insulting the prophet Mohammed.

Rehman, a senior leader of the ruling Pakistan People's Party, had called for changes in the blasphemy law.

In November, she submitted a private bill in Parliament that seeks to drop the mandatory death sentence for blasphemy.

Since then, she has faced criticism from religious hardliners and clerics. Fears for her safety had increased after Taseer's assassination.

this is funny considering that the governer was killed by his own guard....increasing the no. of guards will only increase the no. of people who might have a go on her life.....this is because the guards might be inspired by the praise the mullahs are providing for the guy who killed the governer

Did you know that the murder was politically motivated to shut up the Punjabi Brothers AKA = Nawaz and Shabaz and put pressure on them, did you know that the murder is a clever rouse to play to the heartstrings of the Mullah's and Fundi's, whilst in reality it is a wonderful way to bring about a paradigm shift in the public opinion of the hard-line Muslims living without our society.

Pakistanis are a tempestuous lot, logic fails them but emotion guides them. The party or person that can play with the emotions of the populace is the kingmaker.

They did this during BB's assassination to remove the threat "AKA: Mush". And they have repeated it with Mr. Taseer's assassination to remove the threat of "Shariff Bro's" and curtail the ever growing influence of the turban brigade in Parliament.

Using the tragedy of the demise of the erstwhile governor of Punjab to bring a) control over the collation partners ( or lack thereof) and b) to open up a new focus of debate in public and private circles about the ever increasing menace of fundamentalism and paving a road to curtailing the powers and influence of the mosque in politics.

The grand plan at work ladies and gentlemen... Just sit back and enjoy. :pop:

In addition:

I want to make it clear that the Elite Police officer was actually removed from Special Branch and Security Division by non other that DSP political and he used his friendship with the ATS Moharir ( In charge) to secure a place on the PSD of the governor.

This was not some random nut job radical, but rather a pawn in a very big game.

BTW Where is the contact that Mr. Taseer ( Late) met in Khosar market?

Leave Pakistan if you want to live, Malik tells SherryISLAMABAD - Interior Minister Rehman Malik has advised PPP parliamentarian and former information minister Sherry Rehman to leave the country if she wanted to keep safe from religious extremists.

A source told Pakistan Today on Thursday that Malik telephoned Sherry, who is also in the middle of the controversy over blasphemy laws, to leave the country at the earliest because “fanatics are hell bent to take her life due to her views on blasphemy laws”. Malik cited intelligence reports that warned that extremists were after Sherry’s life and advised her to go abroad for the time being. The source said Sherry, however, declined to leave the country. She told Malik that she would not be attending the National Assembly session on Thursday due to inadequate security in the federal capital. She also told Malik that she felt more secure in Karachi rather than Islamabad.
