KARACHI: The government could not fulfill its promise of resolving the power crisis in 2016 as the country imported Rs 282.5 billion worth of power generating machinery in the said year.

Despite claims by the government of bringing improvement in the energy crisis, power generating machinery's demand soared as Pakistan spent Rs 172.9 billion on the import of power generating machinery during July-December of the current fiscal, showing 110 percent growth over same period of last fiscal.

This exorbitant rise clearly indicates that the demand for power generating machinery is continuously putting pressure on the import bill of Pakistan, as precious foreign currency is utilized for the import of generators. It is to be noted that Pakistan's monthly average bill for power generating machinery stood at $52 million by 2012, however the lingering power outages pushed this bill gigantically up to $225 million in December 2016.

The government was continuously claiming addition of significant electricity on the national grid last year, but the statistics indicate that the country is still struggling to prevail over the shortage of energy. New fiscal year is still witnessing a gloomy situation in terms of persisting power shortages, which has led to 12 to 15 hours power load shedding per day in the country.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP)'s first quarterly report for the fiscal year 2016-17 (FY17) said that the country's import bill grew in current fiscal year led by an increase in machinery imports, the rise in non-oil imports more than offset the decline in Petroleum Oil Lubricants (POL) imports in the period. Machinery imports surged by 60.0 percent year on year (YoY) in the first quarter of FY17 and reached $ 2.7 billion, surpassing POL imports during the period.

In fact, 94.3 percent of the increase in overall imports in the period was due to the rise in machinery imports, the SBP added. A surge in investment in power generation and distribution infrastructure boosted demand for power generation and electrical machinery. Construction activities related to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects also put an upward pressure on imports of products like cranes, weighing machinery and compressors, and vacuum pumps, the report added.

There should be a ban on Generators as they eat up oil / gassoline / petrol which ever commodity that fits the model
Generators should only be allowed perhap in Hospitals

So Pakistanis should live in stone age without gas and electricity ?
Your leaders are allowed to rob country's wealth and deposit it foreign banks and companies but common man must not be allowed to get every day necessities.

.
Just buy some ice , and sprinkle some cold water from time to time
May be people need to invest in plants around the home premis to help cool down neighbourhood temperatures

Should be 100% ban on Electrical generators that are run by "Gas/ Oil / Petrol"

  • Motor Bikes (Need a ban as they contribute to Terrorism and Crime)
  • Electric generators (as they contribite to High usage of Oil/Petrol/Gas commodity pretty much economical Terrorism

Quite easy to solve the problem

If anyone is interested in importing commercial tier IV generators, hit me up.
how are they divided in tier ? please provide some info link about different generators

.
At this rate Pakistanis will spend close to $5 billion on generators in 2017.

No I think, investing in domestic petrol or diesel generators will be foolishness. There might be several causes of hike in electric generators: no control of natural gas usage for domestic generators, low prices of petrol, coordinated generator mafia, increased purchasing power.

Wow! We love to import everything and anything and invest money in plots and not in industry and research! Thats what differentiates india from us...indians manufecture almost everything inside their country.no wonder india has progressed so much and we are still importing shit like chot**s

You're right about investing money in industry and research, however, I wish you had quoted example of America instead. Talking about general public, situation in India is much worse. I don't know what progress are you taking about, when I see average GDP per capita, I don't see any big difference and median income per capita figures are much better here than India. Anyway, I'm not India centric person, so, I'll just emit India from discussion.

In fact, it is right we're not spending much on building opportunities. Given the resources of individuals, team effort is required but we don't have any team spirit at all.

Here in Karachi, in my area, there is hardly a load shedding since 2012. I think by 2018, power blacks out will be greatly reduced all around the country as major power plants construction are underway through out the country so lets give Govt a little time for that.

Power outage is under control even using the same capacity we had, even in small cities power outage doesn't exceed 1-3 hours. Rural areas, however, still face 2-4 hours based on my observation. And you're right, once the capacity being installed is operational, this will not be an issue at all unless PPP comes to power again.

In fact, these Electric Generators are not for domestic use, articles said.

What are those? UPS?

Yeah man, here in India every house has onw installed. An UPS Inverter plus a battery.
Generators are only used in commercial places, that too big showrooms, hotels and offices only.
Generators are almost replaced by Invertera at home.
