Pakistan has started fencing the border with Afghanistan

Russia, iran, India all tried to gain depth in Afghanistan. Pakistan was not the only one.
But that type of thinking is at least 20 years old. Please update your opinion to 2014.

I categorically stated on the first page of this thread that I am against talibs, when you asked the same question. The more important question is are YOU with YOU or against YOU. By which I mean, are all Pakistanis united against taliban and their ideology and goals? If you are honest, you will realize that there are more Pakistanis who side with talibs, than there are Indians who might.

That depends on whether the fence will be effective or not, which is the question I was raising. Will it help stop the migration of terrorists and militants to and fro? Will it help eradicate taliban and similar groups? Then I am all for it. Will it simply be a colossal waste of money, and even after the fence is built, will they continue to find safe haven on each side of the border? Then I am against it. I'm sure you will agree.

There is no shortage of mountains along the LOC either, is there? But terrorists have snuck in through mountains, and they will do it in Af-Pak as well. Heck, there are videos on youtube of Afghan talibs making their way through rocky mountains into Pakistan. (I won't post them here, because they come from jihadi propoganda sources.)

Fencing is a one time cost, but manning and monitoring it is a recurring expense. But anyway, if the alternative is continous war, then it's a smaller expense. I'm just not sure if it is that easy to insulate Pak and Afgh from each other, like India and Pak. One of the reasons is that the people living near the common borders have a lot of cultural affinity to each other, and think in terms of tribal or ethnic loyalties, rather than nationality. Can an electric fence put an end to the two way migration once and for all? In our case, it was a matter of keeping Pakistani jihadists and infiltrators out, not entire populations always migrating to and fro.

Okay. So your solution to this problem is that no solution is possible because we are poor? Do you have any idea how expensive the latest operation is? Common sense cost benefit analysis will bring you numbers that evicting them every 3 years or so from heavily dug in positions will be more costly than stopping them at the border. Not to mention no IDP problems with huge amounts spent on dislodging entire towns and cities. The few terrorists that do make it can be dealt by the villagers themselves, which was always the excuse given by the "peaceful" tribal elders. They always said they were too many. We are not worried about the migration. Migrations and vacations happen through proper channels, those that are not used to the new system will be made to follow it for the sake of their and their families security.

I don't think fencing will work. USA tried some part with Mexico and it never worked out.

LOC fencing works because it is electrified, three layered, mined, and continously monitored - by foot soldiers, by thermal and other sensors, UAVs, etc.

yeah of course lol, its not always about money.. just look at what pakistan manages to do with its army even though we got a smaller budget then afghanistan, and 5 times smaller then india.

That will be difficult to do in current scenario. First you have to protect your people.

most area of borders are mountains only small area is the passage ways.

Very good move. To the nay sayers reflecting on expenses. No expense is bigger than the country's security. We have tried and waited too long over sensitivities of the Pashtuns. It is high time that the country take precedence over all regional, ethnic sensitivities.

Additionally, let's just do it. Nothing ever has started with negativity, got to think positive and then take issues by the horn as they come forth. But start and complete we must.

I agree, but in South Asia anything is possible. They will cut and sell it, extra money for terrorists.
