Pakistan has one of Asia’s highest HIV prevalence rates

Yes, maybe I didn't phrase that post right. There has been an overall increase in incidences of Aids in Pakistan, mainly due to the use of syringes. But no where does it talk about how significantly the overall number of aids patients has increased in Pakistan, because all we know, this could be a very small number. Anyways, I think we need to have more statistical evidence to show how this impacts the overall AID prevalence in the country.

The article states that the incidence doubled between 2005 and 2008 . That is very rapid.

According to UNAIDS, HIV prevalence in Pakistan nearly doubled from 11% in 2005 to 21% in 2008

From 1.1 % to 2.1 % in 3 years . Added the decimal ofcourse.

2.1% of Pakistan's population (180 million) is 3,780,000 people, or 3.78 million people.

We know that this is false because Pakistan has a total of 98,000 people with HIV; & 0.054% of the total population (= 98,000/180 million * 100).

These are the figures I got for HIV prevalence rates:

Now, what has happened in Pakistan is that 11% of the users got Aids through drug injection, whereas 3 years later, the users that got aids through drug injection increased to 21%.

Just consider what it said in bold & red here:

HIV/AIDS: Pakistan has one of Asia’s highest HIV prevalence rates
Published: August 27, 2011
KARACHI:

Pakistan is among the 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific which houses a majority of the people infected with HIV, according to a new report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Neighbouring India and China are also on the list, which includes Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.

Launched at the 2011 International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), the report, titled HIV in Asia and the Pacific: “Getting to Zero”, found that more people than ever before have access to HIV services across the region. But most countries in the region are a long way from achieving universal access goals for HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

According to UNAIDS, HIV prevalence in Pakistan nearly doubled from 11% in 2005 to 21% in 2008. The greatest source of a spread in the virus was use of drug injections and the UNAIDS says that an estimated one in five people who inject drugs in Pakistan are HIV-positive.

One in five people who get aids by drug injection comes out to be approximately 21%.

in Pakistan the registered patients are very low..the few cases i have seen were exclusively migrant workers from dubai..unfortunately it was the wife who presented first..sad
i havnt seen nay drug related case..

.
Pakistan has the highest rate, but not the total number as Pakistan is a small country compared to likes of China and India.

But in rates in terms of HIV per 100 people, Pakistan is indeed first.

.
There seems to be a typo in quoting the percentages. Even 1% would mean the figure would be in the millions where as the maps shows it to be under 100,000.

UNAIDS in its report gives the figure to be around 100,000 people.

Safe to say, Express Tribune screwed it up?

Ahh, makes sense. Weak reporting. Still quite sad, a fifth of the people could have easily been saved from HIV if we had simply better drug control.

You speak like you have some hard studies, statistics, facts to support that claim... Please provide one.

Pakistan's aids prevalence by % of its population: 98000/180,000,000 * 100 = 0.054%
India's aids prevalence by % of its population: 2400000/1200,000,000 * 100 = 0.2%

0.054% of Pakistan's total population is infected, whereas 0.2% of India's total population is infected with Aids. Looking at absolute numbers (equal populations), Aids is almost 4 times more prevalent in India than it is in Pakistan.

My calculations are also supported by the UN Aids report:

http://www.unaids.org/documents/20101123_2010_HIV_Prevalence_Map_em.pdf

.
The report is clearly incorrect, and has been proven false by many valid international sources. Why does this thread continue? It's just rubbish.

.
The Express tribune is giving the Times of India a run for its money.

Here's the report if anyones interested.

http://www.unaids.org/en/media/unaids/contentassets/documents/unaidspublication/2011/20110826_APGettingToZero_en.pdf

The 21% figure if for drug users. Page 113 in the report.

Asia includes 7 of the 15 countries globally where over 100*000 people inject drugs and where HIV prevalence among them exceeds 10%. These countries are China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and Viet Nam. — An estimated one in six people who inject drugs in Asia is infected with HIV.

More than one in three people who inject drugs surveyed in Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand areHIV-positive, one in four in Cambodia and one in five in Nepal, Pakistan and Viet Nam.

— In Pakistan, HIV prevalence almost doubled from 11% in 2005 to 21% in 2008, and in Bangladesh, prevalence among people who inject drugs in Dhaka rose from 1.4% in 2000 to 7% in 2007 (the latest available data).

^^Thats the figure in question. It clearly says, the percentage amongst drug users have gone up from 11% to 21%. Not for the overall population.

So the Express Tribune fellas, message is clear, stop doing drugs and writing articles, or you risk getting HIV!

=====================================

On a more serious note, the HIV numbers in Asia are almost constant now. That means no more substantial new cases of HIV, which means people are getting more aware and cautious. I can drink to that.
