NEW DELHI: Even on its day of Independence, Pakistan seemed to be able to justify its existence only vis-a-vis India.
Pakistan celebrated its Independence Day today, August 14, by unprovoked firing on Indian military posts in Jammu, with its high commissioner calling for "independence" in Kashmir while sitting in Delhi, and by distributing sweets to India's Border Security Force personnel on the Wagah border.
Pakistan's army on Sunday began its I-day celebrations around 3 am by unprovoked firing on Indian military posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in the border district of Poonch. Security analysts are calling the firing a major ceasefire violation. Today's firing, after a lull of over four months, saw the Pakistan Army firing heavy mortar, small arms and automatic weapon fire at two places in the Shahpu Kandi area of Poonch.
"The Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir," Defence Spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta told PTI.
"Our troops are responding appropriately and no casualties or damage to our troops was reported till the report last came in. The firing was still going on" Colonel Mehta added.
There have been 30 ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the LoC as of July 31, ANI said.
Last year, 16 civilians were killed and 71 others injured in 405 incidents of cross-border firing by Pakistan, the officer said.
There have been 253 incidents of ceasefire violations took place along the International Border, with 152 incidents were reported along the LoC, an army spokesperson told PTI.
Exchange of sweets
The distribution of sweets on the border is an annual tradition.
Last year, India bucked tradition and neither offered nor accepted sweets from its counterpart, the Pakistani Rangers, on the occasion. This was to protest a series of cross border terrorist attacks by Pakistan in July 2015 in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. A BSF official said last August that the 'prevailing situation' along the border prevented the BSF from showing any "soft gestures" to the Pakistani Rangers.
On July 27 2015, three terrorists launched a massive terror attack in the Punjab town of Dinanagar, killing 10 people. Two BSF soldiers were killed when two terrorists attacked a BSF convoy in Udhampur on August 5.
Today, the Pakistan Rangers offered sweets to BSF personnel at Wagah, but it remains to be seen if India reciprocates tomorrow.
