ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has attained a huge space in the global rice market for exporting local rice in potential markets of Middle East, North America and African regions to achieve the target of increasing the agricultural exports, said Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood.

Talking to APP on Saturday, he said that the government intended to uplift exports to their highest level ever and for that purpose, it was taking different measures to reclaim traditional markets besides accessing new ones.

He added that a rice delegation from Mexico would hopefully arrive in Pakistan in June to appraise various rice exporters to attain permission for exporting rice to Mexico.
The adviser said the all members of the Rice Exports Association Pakistan (REAP) should prepare themselves for this opportunity so that maximum exporters could receive approvals for orders in the Mexican market.

Dawood said that rice was the largest agri-export commodity in the country’s export basket with a total value of over $2 billion, which would be increased to $5 billion in the next five years.

He urged the local rice exporters to introduce new varieties by investing in research and development to enhance production and quality.

Replying to a question, he said that even in the current critical situation, the country’s food exports to the Middle Eastern market, especially meat and poultry, have increased compared to the same period of previous year.

Replying to another question, he stressed the need for making preparations to exploit the economic and trade opportunities expected to emerge post Covid-19 pandemic.

“We expect more opportunities to promote bilateral trade and strengthen linkages with potential markets including European Union, China, Middle East and African region besides promoting regional trade in post pandemic environment,” he said.

He underlined that the pandemic would bring a paradigm shift and will create great opportunities, adding that the coronavirus had changed the world and now the business processes would be completely different.

Dawood said that the government was focusing equally on all sectors of the economy including textile, non-textile and agriculture and engineering sectors to build export potential of the country in coming months.

Talking about the external trade situation during the past three months, he said exports had declined in April 2020 by around 54% compared to the same month of last year and the reason behind the decline was obviously the spread of coronavirus across the world.

Dawood said that the government was prioritising ‘Made in Pakistan’ policy to boost local production and reduce dependence on import and enhance exports.

we should not export food items as scientists are warning about massive famine in coming years just like covid19 occurred suddenly, also there are various changes occurring in sun which will reduce solar power in coming time and will badly effect agriculture produce

Bro that may happen or not, but current locust attack is going to cause food shortages soon

Covid-19 has impacted food supplies people are at home eating more and less farm work being done so natural countries are looking at Pakistan for food related purchases

Interesting article. Pakistan is making inroads in global export markets across a number of fronts.

I stocked up on some Pearl White, Badshah rice here from ASDA who were selling them. Made me happy to not buy Indian, and support Pakistan. You have to be careful as there are brands like Laila who pretend to look like a Pakistani brand!

Right now, I am wearing Levi's 501s made in Pakistan. Made me super happy when i saw the label. Bought some Utopia(made in Pakistan) towels of Amazon recently!!!

I avoid India, where ever i see a Made in India label as a point of principle.

Same here but others don't really care as long as it's cheap

We have atleast 2 to 3 years rice in store. Besides its not our staple food.
Practically not eaten in interior country exceptionally on some event or wedding.
And locust would hurt the crop but government is taking action now. Things would approve as locust would take 2 to 3 years before they are fully eliminated.
Even if they cause distraction out yeild would like 30 percent low. We still produce enough for all of the country.

I don't agree. Farmers are suffering as of now.

Well pakistani farmers are far better then Indian counterparts. Though yeah they lack technology but still they are fine.
Besides many things are going on with respect to locusts but they don't show it. The Chinese are assisting big time and we ourselves are doing quite a lot.
Well in pakistan its culture, even if you meet a billionare he would complain about everything.
Not all cases are equal, there might be some sectors where they may have some problems. Some sectors maybe very well off.
Though we need technology to improve their yeild.
Need more and more cheaper locally made fertiliser and pest control sprays.
The focus has never been on making the raw materials cheap in pakistan. That's also mindset.

Thank the fertile soil, hardworking rice cultivators and and the rich waters of Chanab river of Gujranwala division and adjoining areas in Rachna Doab where all this high quality basmati rice is produced for centuries not only for the domestic markets but also for the international markets. I think we are just great.

We can produce a lot more if we have assign someone to train and educate farmers and use widely available technology as basics.

.
The govt should do a lot more. A strict watch on the quality should also be instituted. Private exporters have embarrassed the country countless times.

Govt should actually buy directly from small farmers and export them directly. This will profit both and cut down red tape.

Take full advantage and establish a market share. Pak rice is the best in the world.

.
Turbulent times ahead. There should be a strict focus on a strategic reserve of all food types and the export quota needs special attention. On papers and social media everything is going super-cool but we all witnessed what happened in the last quarter of 2019.

Once something is gone — its gone. Whether people then blame current government or a ghost from the past. Nothing is going to bring it back. The hunger and price-hike would be real.

we are living in very uncertain world these days and there is high risk of unexpected situation in coming days, also our war with india seems very near and it will badly affect our production, who knows that pandemic much lethal than corona virus originate in world in coming days badly effecting our economy and we have to rely on previously stored food.By 2025 we may see extreme water shortage due to climate change and violation of water treaty by india
