Found this interesting part in this New York Times report from today:

Pakistan retaliated on Wednesday by flying planes across the border into Indian airspace.

While Indian officials have not detailed how Wing Commander Varthaman was shot down, Western officials said they believe he was lured into a trap by Pakistani jets.

They say that after Pakistani jets crossed into Indian airspace, they quickly turned and flew away, tempting their pursuers into an area well covered by Pakistani air defenses, which then hit Wing Commander Varthaman’s plane with a surface-to-air missile.

There was no second jet.
Only a MiG 21 & an Mi-17 chopper which crashed.
Whether the chopper was shot or it crashed due to technical fault is not yet clear.

This explains why Pakistan did not release footage of MiG 21 being shot down.

BTW Mi17 shot is also embarrassing .. 6 of their airmen were charcoled in broad day light by our jets 100 kms away yet IAF has remain silent on it . Downed helicopter pictures clearly suggests that a missile hit it . Big hole clearly visible

Pakistan govt has apparently announced that they will arrange an intl media tour to confirm that its inventory of F-16s is fully in tact.
