F-16V

The F-16V is the latest in F-16 evolution. Leveraging 40 years of experience, the F-16V includes enhancements such as an AESA Radar, advanced architecture, new center display and the latest in certified weaponry. This improves pilot situational awareness and provides customers increased operational capability. The F-16V is an option for new production jets and current fleet upgrades. The Taiwan government selected the F-16V configuration for its 145 Block 20 F-16 A/B aircraft.

Lockheed Martin announced that it completed the first flight of the F-16V configuration it is developing for Taiwan’s air force on October 16. The flight from Fort Worth, Texas, marked the first time an F-16 has flown with Northrop Grumman’s APG-83 active electronically scanned array (AESA) fire-control radar, the manufacturer said. The competing Raytheon Advanced Combat Radar has also flown on the F-16.

In addition to the Northrop Grumman AESA radar, the Viper-model fighter comes with a new Elbit Systems of America 6-by-8 center pedestal display (CPD) that replaces electro-mechanical instruments in the cockpit. Other features include an upgraded mission computer, a high-capacity Ethernet data bus, and other mission systems enhancements, according to Lockheed Martin.

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) awarded Lockheed Martin a $1.85 billion contract in late 2012 to begin the AESAretrofit and upgrade of 145 F-16A/B Block 20 fighters operated by the Republic of China air force. Asked for an update on the program, the manufacturer said it is “not at liberty to provide any updates about the Taiwan F-16 program at this time.”

In September, the USAF said its 416th flight-test squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., would begin flying two AESA-equipped fighters that month through August 2016 as part of the F-16 Radar Modernization Program (RMP). It described the latter program as a risk-mitigation effort “to deliver fully developed AESA radars for integration on foreign military sales and U.S. Air Force F-16 aircraft.” Although the U.S. has not approved equipping its own fleet, “the RMP flight-test efforts here will directly affect the AESA radar development for the F-16 Phoenix Rising Project for Taiwan, slated to begin at the end of 2015,” the service said.

Earlier this year, Lockheed Martin said that it was taking part in discussions with the U.S. and Korean governments to upgrade South Korea’s KF-16C/D Block 52 fighters, a program originally awarded to BAESystems. The U.S. State Department approved the possible foreign military sale in July, according to a Defense Security Cooperation Agency notification to Congress. The notification valued the program at $2.5 billion for 134 aircraft.

In its reply to AIN, Lockheed Martin also provided no new information on the Korean program. “Customer interest in the F-16V remains strong and we expect interest to grow now that we have entered the flight-test phase of the program,” the manufacturer said. “As an option for both new production F-16s and F-16 upgrades, the F-16V offers advanced combat capabilities to both existing and potential new F-16 customers.”

My Questions: If Taiwan can upgrade their old F-16s to F-16 V standards why Pakistan cannot upgrade their old F-16s?

Pakistan cannot upgrade because of

1 US Congress which already stalled 8 F-16 deal which Obama Administration offered to Pakistan
2 Indian Lobby which would not let them (US) which can hurt em and their plan to make Pakistan isolated
3 People like Hussain Haqqani working there anti-Pakistani movements
4 If US suppose upgrade our F-16 to F-16 V they will attach many string to it...
5 and when there'll be string they want us to do what they ask us to do...

so i Guess we should move from US now and Look to China and Russia...

.
Highly unlikely that the US will ever allow such an upgrade program for Pakistani F-16s. We can count ourselves very lucky if they even offered new Block 52 airframes.

The F-16s are highly sanction prone. It is better to stop dreaming about F-16s. Focus on something more realistic.

You are right but these aged F-16 will become useless after 20-25 years. If Bahrain, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and other countries can upgrade their F-16s why we cannot try to request Americans, we are an important ally and we have solid reasons for it. :(

Can we compare this lethal machine with other realistic? I am worried about old fleet. Upgradation is very necessary with time by more sophisticated EW systems and missiles.

I heard about new F-16s but i don't think he requested to upgrade our old fleet to F-16 V standards.

and to add
The US will then want their own nationals (contractors) to be based with these aircraft to make sure the strings attached are really adhered to. Which Pakistan be made to pay for, thus adding an extra cost to an already expensive package.

We need to understand that our relation with the Americans is based on distrust. This is the very nature of this relationship. The Americans will only offer the F-16s when they have something extraordinary to gain from it. You can forget the F-16s if the Americans feel they have nothing to extract from us.

We need to develop some self respect and call it a day as far the F-16 is concerned. Even if we get them today they are always sanction prone in the future.

Use the current fleet of F-16s as long as we can get our hands on spares and the Americans are willing to cooperate.

F-16V would be about Blk 55, given the current mood in DC, I don't think that is going to happen, unfortunately.

One can already gauge that the mood is only going to worsen in the days ahead. Not to mention the elections which might bring the worst to the forefront. It is better to play safe and start preparing for the worst outcome. Fully focus on acquisitions from China and Russia. European and American options are a non-starter from every point of view. This is how it is.
