Pakistan eyes US frigate as Congress debates transfer bill

More Perrys To Turkey

August 17, 2008: The Turkish Navy is getting two more used U.S. Perry class frigates, one as a gift, and the other for cash. The two ships were recently retired from U.S. service, and will be refurbished at American expense. The Turks already have eight Perrys. The new LCS (Littoral Combat Ships) is sort of replacing the 1970s era Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates (4,100 ton ships that would cost about $125 million to build today) in U.S. service. The big difference between the frigates and LCS is the greater use of automation in the LCS (reducing crew size to 75, versus 176 in the frigates) and larger engines (giving the LCS a speed of about 90 kilometers an hour, versus 50 for the frigates.) The 3,000 ton LCS also has a large "cargo hold" designed to hold different "mission packages" of equipment and weapons.

The U.S. Navy operated as many as 51 Perrys, but only 30 are in service now. The Perrys carry anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles, as well as torpedoes, a 76mm gun and a helicopter. These ships proved very reliable, and were able to survive battle damage well.

We are quick to praise the Turks yet they have a firm alliance with the US through Nato. No one is going to come asking how many missiles the ship is carrying. For us you never know, the equipment could be sabotaged from here on out. That's my view anyway.

hopefully we stop acquiring American products, a reliable and neutral source is the better way to go for all defense needs.

Wow I can't believe you are saying this. Don't you know that the US military/NSA has the most advanced bugging and tracking devices in the world? I mean where else can you buy a piece of s^%t floating dumpster which has thousands of time and signal activated homing devices, emf transmitters and who knows what else embedded deep inside metal plate crevices.

Think of the possibilites here. Yeah yeah yeah I know you are going to say that because of all the boot licking poodle generals and the sold out politicians Pakistan is never going to directly engage the USN but try to think positive here, what if the Indian Navy and Pak Navy are engaged again--the US could hand over tracking information to India and get plenty of use out of the bugs.

This is very sarcastic. You get 10 points. But in all seriousness this man is correct, and please put him in charge of all future naval procurements. Remember, "cheaper" is not always better. And American products that are marketed to Pakistan are at least a decade old before use (in this ship's case, 30 years jam packed with NSA goodies). Let's stop this trend and start getting fresh toys with the newly inflated 8 billion a year defense budget.

Wow...so the world doesn't revolve if Pakistan doesn't have tracking devices on it's naval fleet from NSA ? Think about the coherence of logic here, for there is very little. Indian ships don't scare me enough to go begging the devil himself for something I could easily purchase from a friend or neutral party. I would even be happy to pay more, as many systems are starting to match or outclass anything coming out of the US, and the top of the line stuff they have is never sold to us to begin with. Remember, these frigates that you are pouring your tears over are retired old and refurbished "hand-me-downs", what kind of intimidation are you going to have on an enemy that is expecting to fight second hand equipment that is probably sabotaged?

You completely missed my sarcasm. My point was that this piece of garbage is going to be installed with about 2000 different bugs, tracking devices and perhaps nano-bombs which will make this ship a deathtrap potentially.

Here, go and read this: Sarcasm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And then after you have understood that, read my original post again. :hitwall:

Excuse me for not catching every whiff of sarcasm.

Let me go back and edit my post

Due to the terrible balance of payments problem don't you think it is better that as much as possible is built in Pakistan? If the PN is assembling submarines now then how hard could ships be? Oh yeah, it will be a lot harder for anyone to bug the ships if every nut and bold is assembled under the eyes of the PN.

I'm not too keen about relying too heavily on domestic production yet. Yes we should start building ships but the ones that are going to defend us should come from well placed orders among nations like France, China, Italy, Russia, etc. until our expertise allows us to compete globally in these fields.

Our rate of production is very slow and anything would have to be done in collaboration with a nation expert in building ships of all sizes, so either skip the price of ToT and buy directly or find a partner and build an Al Khalid or JF-17 for the navy, in the form of a destroyer or stealth attack boats like China has.

These ships would be a stop gap measure nothing more until more suitable systems can be afforded.

Just heard on Geo News that . US will Give Pakistan Navy a Frigate by 2010. any details anybody ?

.
President bush has authorized the delivery of the frigate to Pakistan navy and it will be fitted with Anti submarine weapon systems.

I think it will be a old frigate in service with US navy, when they wanted to get rid of it they gave it to Pakistan.
