Pakistan digging 480km long trenches near Afghan border

.
It will be good only to stop smuggling not incursions unless it's heavily mined.

. .
At least this will provide some sort of protection and will prevent incursions from across the border

.
over time the defences will be strengthened , it cannot happen overnight ,this however is a step in the right direction

.
This should have been done long time ago. I wish we never had Afghanistan as a neighbor.

what most ppl do not know here is that this trench was dug for a very strategic purpose...not to slow or stop the militants but to create a imaginary borderline .......PA is now changing it methods and in a region like this they needed a strategic landmark for the Arial recon drones to patrol around. this trench creates a borderline for land forces and Arial assets to direct there efforts towards rather than willy nilly patrolling a large piece of land.

.
how wide is the trenches? looks like 2 to 3 meters.
terrorist only needs to bring a few planks of wood of that length and he's got a bridge or bring a ladder.
still better than nothing.
guard posts and camps along the border with night vision should catch some attempting to cross.

Whytf we would want to annex Afghan areas?

look at terrain and satellite image. south west afghanistan is mostly desert, rocks(with potential for hydrocarbon), but eastern part of afghanistan with pashtun and nuristani majority is actually quite lush in some parts because of kabul and tributary rivers, with huge potential for winter tourism like northern areas if things are peaceful.

only way peace has prevailed in afghanistan is if they rule the region, or surrounding regional power rules them. now the first is never going to happen because even with nukes out of equation.. it is afghanis afterall.. gap is turning into canyon every year as they prefer to slaughter each other rather than build anything. and best suited to rule pashtun majority areas is obvious because of geographical and all other linkages with our pakhtuns. more so since afg going backwards, and Pak entering middle income status within couple of decades. therefore in long term pashtun majority areas will be slowly incorporated, first with confederation type set up then eventually full integration.

The achakzai tribe lives on both sides of border, smuggling and disrespect of border is mostly common in those areas where tribes live on either side of border. Mahmood khan achakzai and brigd. abdul razik achakzai (who spoke against punjab in a video) would place the interest of their tribe above their respective countries. The division of such tribes has proved beneficial to them, they are practically nationals of two countries. So even if you dig a ditch, are you sure tribes like achakzais are respecting border?

This shitty trench is not enough to check Afghan fighters.

Why are you so worried that Pakistan is trying to stop Afghan insurgency? feel some plans may fall apart? specially after what is being done in Operation Zarb-r-Azb??
moreover, the two tire barbed fence with electricity, hundreds of thousands of lightning poll, many hundreds of thousands of armed security force personal, thousands of posts and bunkers, what have they given YOU?? i mean still India claim that despite all this there is insurgency from Pakistani side :P And remember, the Pak Afghan border is hell of a lot more complex and complicated to protect and guard then Pak India border most of which lies in plain area.

Dear, these things are JUST precautionary measures, will make crossing over a bit difficult, the job of ensuring that they do not cross wont be left to this trench but to the same men who are already guarding our borders.
