Pakistan deploys 15,000-strong force for Chinese security

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has deployed a 15,000-strong military force to protect Chinese nationals working on energy and infrastructure projects in the country, the president said Sunday, after the abduction of a Chinese couple raised safety concerns.

President Mamnoon Hussain told visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Islamabad that the protection of Chinese citizens working in Pakistan was the "top priority" of the government, according to a statement issued by the presidency.

Beijing is investing around $50 billion in its South Asian neighbour as part of a plan unveiled in 2015 to link its far-western Xinjiang region to Gwadar port in Balochistan with a series of infrastructure, power and transport upgrades.

But fears over safety arose last month when two Chinese workers were abducted in Quetta, the capital of the southwestern Balochistan province, which is at the heart of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project but racked by separatist and militancy.

Authorities were going to all possible efforts to arrest those responsible for kidnapping, Hussain said.

Pakistan has been battling militancy and insurgencies in Balochistan since 2004, with hundreds of soldiers martyred and militants killed in the fighting.

Good move IMHO! We already had10,000 troops so with this addition a total of 25000. Still not a significant number to protect such a large area but under the circumstances would have to do for now.

Its a sensible question to be asked.
I havent heard of any terrorist attack on CPEC as of yet. (The two chinese who were abducted have been blamed for their fate because they were preaching.)
The attacks have been happening in the usual places all along, and there is no additional security being given there.

It is a very nice excuse to beef up the security in that region. After all, it is a Pakistan territory. Securing the whole Pakistan is the job of its armed forces.

Since 2015, Balochistan has been militarised by additional 25,000 soldiers. Pakistan is slowly but surely securing the South of the country as much as the North Western, Central and Eastern Pakistan have been secured over the past decades.

Can anyone confirm how many Air Bases does Pakistan have in Balochistan out of the total in the country?

Ignore the negative responses u may have gotten. Some ppl here r fed up with Indian trolls talking cr@p about CPEC. The question u asked is valid though I'm not sure about the answer to that. However I would say that it is a necessary step and must be done even though it would cost us bcuz at the end of it all it would mean a developed Pakistan(in terms of infrastructure, energy needs, job, etc).

You could look for a joint insurance corpus similar to what we have created with the foreign companies investing in Indian nuclear reactors.
The full burden should never fall on u, as chinese are also making a profit. They r not doing charity here.
