The Pakistani government on Thursday expressed gratitude to Cuba for its efforts in helping survivors from the earthquake affected areas in northern Pakistan since last October.
At the premiere of a documentary film, On the Hills of the Himalayas, here Thursday, Pakistan's Secretary Information Shahid Rafi said that the Cubans rendered outstanding services to over 1. 5 million earthquake victims.
"Coming half way around the world, they set very high standards of professionalism and service in the earthquake affected areas of Pakistan," he told the Cuban medical brigade, government officials and journalists present at the ceremony.
In his brief remarks that he recorded in the Cuban-made documentary to be screened on the Pakistan's official PTV world on Friday, Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf said that he had lost for words to praise the medical team, the Cuban government and its people.
He said that he was extremely grateful to his Cuban counterpart, Fidel Castro Ruz for helping the people in the far off areas of Pakistan after the devastating earthquake.
The documentary was filmed in Pakistan three months after an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude struck northern Pakistan on Oct. 8, 2006.
Charge'd Affairs of the Cuban Embassy Ivan Mora said that the Cuban medial team worked under most difficult conditions.
"But we wanted to send a message to the international community that human solidarity is really possible," he added.
The first group of Cuban medical workers arrived in Pakistan on Oct. 14 last year and gradually their number swelled to more than 2,500.
The Cuban government has donated 238 tons of medicines and surgical equipment and over 275.3 tons of medical and hospital equipment.
Scheduled to leave Pakistan in May, the Cuban medical team is also handing over 30 field hospitals, equipped with modern medical equipment to the Pakistani authorities in the quake devastated areas.
