An ambitious Pakistan-China Economic Zone that was to be spread over 1,000 acres in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is now "a dead project", said an official.

The provincial government has decided to expand the Hattar Industrial Estate by using 1,000 acres originally meant for Pak-China Economic Zone.

"The Pak-China Economic Zone (CPEZ) is a dead project now and a part of the land acquired for it has to be used for some other purpose," an official told Dawn.

The economic zone was part of the President's Initiatives for Trade, Energy, Transport and Industrial Corridor that was launched in February 2007. It invesigated the creation of new economic opportunities with the China's support.

An official said the federal government shelved this project due to financial crunch and the decision on whether to continue with the project was left to the province.

"...since the land has already been acquired the government has decided to expand the existing Hattar Industrial Estate, as the land is adjacent to the estate and there is also a demand for new plots," said the official.

He said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had allocated Rs.400 million for the infrastructure development.

The same kind of inititative failed in BD too. Chinese companies are not interested in massive manufacturing investment overseas. Its Koreans who are investing heavily now a days. Samsung itself wants exclusive economic zone for them to invest more than 1.2 billion dollar and will export more than a billion every year. Another korean company Youngone built a economic zone for Korean companies and they built it by themselves.

province isn't spending 400million on infrastructure cause the project is dead dahhhhhhhhh may be in India you guys invest money in projects after killing them but most spend money to expand the project cause the industry in the area requires infrastructure to grow.

letting provinces handle there own isn't considered stupid its a good move first they ask for the name change which they have now they have must ask for more and they are getting it its progress in right direction or there could be a move like Balochistan which Indians will love to see that's why they are spreading these lies.

Set up a new industrial estate or expand an existing one, the end result is same ie: 1000 acres of land is being used for industrial development so that doesnt make any difference on how it is done..jealousy blinds common sense.
