KARACHI: The captain of Pakistan’s blind cricket team, who was shifted to a hospital in critical condition after he drank acid from a bottle which was supposed to contain water, was treated and released from the hospital, Express News reported Saturday.

The Indian media, however, has alleged that the Pakistani captain consumed detergent water, not acid and accused Pakistani media of blowing the issue out of proportion.

Captain Zeeshan Abbasi – who is leading the country in the Blind Twenty 20 series underway in Banglore – consumed the hazardous substance from a bottle on his table.

“The mineral water bottles were given to us everyday; the acid was in one of those bottles,” said the team manager.

The manager said that since the entire team is blind, they did not know that there was acid inside the bottle instead of water.

“How can this be a mistake? How was it on the breakfast table?” he enquired.

Chairman Blind Cricket Council Sultan Shah – speaking to Express News – was shocked by the incident and said that such a thing had never happened before.

Just yesterday, Abbasi led the team to its fourth consecutive win in the tournament, and that too against India. Pakistan beat India by eight wickets.

Why the acid was placed on his table or who put it there is under investigation, said the chairman.

Abbasi was shifted to a hospital where he is under treatment he confirmed, adding that they had an argument with the hotel management over the incident.

The hotel management has assured the chairman that they will check through CCTV footage and find the reason behind the incident.

The PBCC has accepted an apology by the hotel administration and has decided to continue playing in the tournament.

One man’s mistake not to damage ties

Meanwhile, Pakistan cricket board chairman Zaka Ashraf told reporters in Lahore that Abbasi has been released from hospital after treatment. He added that the Pakistan-India cricket series scheduled for late December will not be affected by this incident.

Ashraf said that initial information about the substance ingested was misreported, and that it was infact washing liquid, and not acid. He added that the hotel management has suspended the erring server.

The Pakistan high commissioner in Delhi has also spoken to the concerned ministry over the incident. The mistake of one man will not affect Pakistan-India relations, nor affect the upcoming bilateral series.

Bangalore: A partially visually impaired Pakistani cricket player on Saturday accidentally drank diluted phenol in his hotel mistaking it to be mineral water and was hospitalised, official sources said.

Zeshan Abbasi (28), here to play World Cup Cricket for the Blind, took a sip of the contents of a plastic bottle that was kept on the table, mistaking it to be mineral water while having breakfast, sources said.

Immediately after learning about the incident, the organisers of the tourney rushed Abbasi to the private multi-speciality MS Ramaiah Hospital, where he is being treated and kept under observation.

"Abbasi is fine", Organising Secretary of the Cricket Association for the Blind, Bangalore, Mahantesh told PTI.

"Abbasi underwent endoscopy as we wanted to rule out any complication and also subjected to certain tests. All reports are normal. He has been shifted to the ward and is fine. He will be kept in observation for about two hours, after which he will be discharged", Dr Shetty, President, M S Ramaiah Hospital, said.

S P Nagesh, President of the All India Cricket Association for the Blind, said "though the hotel management has tendered a written apology to us, we have asked them to investigate the matter and tell us how such a lapse occurred. We are awaiting their reply".

Sultan Shah, Manager of the Pakistan team, said "such an incident that has occurred accidentally should not and will not become an impediment in Indo-Pak cricket relations. We have a very good understanding with the team here and the tournament is being played in a very good atmosphere".

"However, what we want to know from the hotel management who have orally apologised to us, is how such an incident happened and who is responsible for such negligence. It has to be ensured that such incidents do not recur. Otherwise, we are happy with the arrangements here and are focused on the game", he said.

Zeeshan Abassi was apparently served contaminated water for breakfast at a hotel in Bangalore.

The captain of the Pakistan cricket team for the blind, Zeeshan Abbasi, who was admitted to Bangalore’s M. S. Ramaiah hospital early Saturday morning after he allegedly consumed 'soap detergent' at breakfast mistaking it for drinking water, has been discharged.

Pakistani team manager Bilal Satti said the hotel management, where the team is staying, had apologised for the mistake and added that his team considers that the “matter is now resolved”.

Earlier, confusion surrounded the circumstances under which the bottle containing the liquid was picked up by the Pakistani blind cricketer at the hotel.

Speaking to The Hindu on Saturday afternoon, Dr Naresh Shetty, Associate Dean of the M.S. Ramaiah Hospital, said the liquid taken by Mr Abassi "was not acid" as it was initially feared by the Pakistani team management. Consumption of acid would have produced a much more serious reaction that Mr Abbasi did not exhibit, Dr Shetty added.

The hospital however, could not confirm what the contaminant was, as they did not have samples.

But, the management of the Moevenpick hotel and Spa, where the Pakistani cricket team is staying for the T 20 World Cup for the Blind since December 2, profusely apologised for the incident and sought to clarify that the liquid consumed by Mr Abbasi was a soap detergent meant to clean the glass window panes in the hotel.

The hospital bulletin said the patient was brought with a “history of soreness of throat following consumption of 2 sips of white liquid accidentally”. An endoscopy carried out on the patient was reported as normal with the patient fully conscious and his vitals stable. He was discharged after about seven hours of hospitalisation.

Initial quotes from Mr Bilal Satti suggesting that Mr. Abbasi was 'served cleaning acid' had sparked apprehensions that the team, which had thumped India by eight wickets the previous day, had been targeted by miscreants.

Speaking to the media, Pakistan team manager Bilal Satti said, “We arrived at 7 am for breakfast in the hotel – these water bottles were the brand we have been using throughout our visit. It appears that there was some cleaning acid in the bottle. It so happened that the captain drank the water – it could have been any of the players who consumed the contaminated the water.” He spat out the liquid when he realised that it was not water, he added.

Due to play against Bangladesh in a league match on Saturday, he proceeded to the match venue with the rest of the team. However, he complained of soreness in the throat and the team management rushed him to the M.S. Ramaiah hospital. M.S. Ramaiah Hospital are the health partners for the tournament and hospital ambulances are stationed at all venues of the international tournament.

Mr. Biswajith Chakraborty, the GM of Move N Pick hotel, told the media that the soap detergent was being used to clean window glass panes at the hotel. Mr. Abbasi consumed two sips, and later complained to the hotel management. It could not be confirmed if the liquid was placed at the team's breakfast table, or if Mr. Abbasi picked up the bottle elsewhere.

G.K. Mahantesh General, Secretary of the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and founder of the Samarthanam Turst for the Disabled, who are organizing the 10-day tournament, termed the incident as "shocking and embarrassing". He said: “All players are important to us. The Movenpick Hotel have promised an internal inquiry and we await the results.” Mr Mahantesh added the "strictest of actions" will be taken against those responsible for the incident.

Asked about the possibility of Mr Abassi having been targeted, Mr Mahantesh said “I don’t think so. In India we appreciate victory irrespective of who wins. It was good match yesterday – both teams played well and everybody enjoyed themselves.”

Mr Satti also refused to comment on the possibility of vendetta saying he had not heard from the Pakistan High Commissioner yet and added that he expected details on what exactly happened soon.

WoW !!! Great Observation.
Awesome Deduction.

the report of washing liquid is BS, how caouldnt he distinguish the taste of water and washing liquid?

unless being blind, he was tasteless too, also washing liquid is think as compared to water

only thing he would have confused water with another substance is acid water, and this makes more sense

The blind Pakee cricketer must have lost his taste buds along with his eyes before coming to India

What makes More Sense is the Fact That Your Post above is BS and Senseless.

#1. More Over a Person Drinking ACID cant be Discharged in a Few Hrs.
The Internal Burns and Injuries Wont Allow That.

#2. Add to it, Mr. Ashraf The Team Manager has Clearly Stated That it was NOT ACID.

Now Wake Up.
