ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s military will not let Taliban rebels set conditions for peace talks as the government seeks dialogue to end the insurgency, the army chief said Monday.

The statement from General Ashfaq Kayani came a day after two senior military officers were killed by a Taliban bomb in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the military is fighting al-Qaeda and Taliban-led militants.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Sunday announced preconditions for any peace talks, saying troops must be withdrawn from the tribal areas and its prisoners released.
“It is understandable to give peace a chance through a political process but no one should have any misgivings that we would let terrorists coerce us into accepting their terms,” Kayani said.

Politicians last week gave their backing to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s calls to begin talks with the Taliban.
But Kayani warned that militants “will not be allowed to take advantage of it (talks offer)”.
The army, he said, “has the ability and the will to take the fight to the terrorists”.
On Sunday seven security personnel including a major-general and a lieutenant-colonel died in four separate attacks.

Major-General Sana Ullah Khan was general officer commanding in the Swat valley, where the army sent 30,000 troops in 2009 to expel Taliban fighters.

Previous peace deals with the Taliban have quickly broken down and been sharply criticised for allowing the extremists time to regroup before fresh attacks.
Pakistan says more than 40,000 people have been killed in bomb and suicide attacks staged by the Taliban and al-Qaeda-led militants who oppose Islamabad’s US alliance.

“has the ability and the will to take the fight to the terrorists”
that place is afg
enough talking Do some Stuff
When US Can Bomb the heck of many countries for their so called national security Why cant we

Pakistan Army should go back into their bunkers and stop preaching gibberish. Let the Democratically Elected politicians with the massive public mandate do all the talking as the army has proven to be worthless and useless for the past 12-years.

^^ Unfortunately, it was Asif Ali Zardari and his hand picked team ruling Pakistan for last 5-6 years, which resulted in attacks on army and pro Pakistan elements.
Where as all terrorists were set free.
Army cannot sit idle, while Indian bought politicians continue to sell Pakistan in bits and pieces, for US/UK passport.
We all know..... the famous leak about Pakistanis... how they get UK/US visa, during Zardari regime.

Because Pak Army knows their terms are going to be written by their foreign bosses & not by these rented brainless SOB’s.

Finally something good from Gen. Kayani & there is also a message to these spineless politicians, who are a complete failures & brainless.

You forgot to mention, and let these politicians and bureaucrats sell this country and receive payment in foreign banks. Army effectively controlled until these goons came into power and allowed things to go out of hand. What else can we expect from those people who sell their souls to get in power and live on illegally earned money.

Instead of making statements, the PA by its actions should have by now led the Taliban to believe that they have no option but to come to the table.

When the army starts looking for public backing for them to carry out a task assigned by the Govt such situations are bound to arise. Were they asked to hold back ?

By seeing all this. it seems taliban has upper hand now in talks. It may effect army morale.

There is a level of patience in army, which was crossed long time, however, they restrained from deviating from the policy of their commander. It would not be surprising if it crosses the red line anytime.

Nonsense.

Under military-rule Pakistan signed the Unilateral Ceasefire in November 2003 and sold Kashmir to India and under the same coward military-rule Pakistan was first attacked by drones in June 2004 (our military had claimed it was done by Pakistan Armed Forces).

Couple of military-rules from the previous century also cost us East Pakistan and Siachin Glacier. If we let these gun rotting thugs continue to dictate us, it'll cost us the Tribal Areas as well.

and it was your civilian Gov . who wanted peace with taliban & gave them swat , taliban rained hell there , and Army had to intervene to take SWAT back , they sacrificed a lot ,.

So please dont tell me who is coward , let me see you stand on the border , a place where you dont know when you will be attacked & how you will be attacked , it is Pakistan Army who has contained these Rats in some areas , which the World combined is unable to do so in Afghanistan . it is immature internet warriors like you, sitting in comfortable chairs while knowing nothing tend to be experts , having no idea what real world feels like .

today 7/10 people will support dictatorship rather then having scumbag politicians destroy the country .

I will tend to disagree on your take. Just as an example East Pak was not military doing. Yes the game ended in the hands of military. Had ZAB agreed to Mujeeb as PM, things would have been much different today. Grounds were made by politicians and bureaucrats and when things went out of control onus was shifted on PA.

I don't think so brother. There was no Democracy in Pakistan while Tyrants Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan were trying to be heros.

I don't think so Mr Fox. Nobody forces dollarised hyenas of Pakistan Armed Forces to go on a tribal killing spree as soon as a peace deal is about to be signed.
