Pak traders may bid for India's rice import tender
NEW DELHI: Traders from Pakistan may take part in the rice import tender floated by Indian public sector trading firms -- MMTC, STC and PEC --
for import of a total of 30,000 tonnes of rice.
According to industry experts, traders from Pakistan are expected to participate in the tender as the country has one million tonnes of surplus rice for exports. They may even bag the order as they sell rice at cheaper rates than Vietnam and Thailand.
"We are expecting a good response for the tender," an official with a state-owned trading firm said. The bids would open on Monday.
Imports are most likely to take place from Pakistan as prices are cheaper in the neighbouring country than Vietnam and Thailand, he added.
At present, Pakistan is selling the grain at $450 a tonne, while Vietnam and Thailand is quoting USD 470 a tonne and USD 540 a tonnne respectively, the official said.
"There will be a positive response for the tender.
Weighing the current price situation, I see bids may go in favour of Pakistan or Myanmar because their prices are lower than other countries," former president of All India Rice Exporters Association Vijay Sethia said.
This apart, the time and transportation cost from Karachi to Mumbai port is comparatively lesser, Sethia said.
Pakistan has up to one million tonnes of exportable surplus rice, while Thailand and Vietnam have 10 million tonnes and 5 million tonnes, respectively.
