A gunfight with suspected fighters left two Indian soldiers dead and two others injured in India-occupied Kashmir (IoK), days before local elections in the disputed Himalayan region.

IoK has seen a rise in clashes between fighters and security forces ahead of the first local assembly polls in the region for a decade.

The Indian army said the firefight took place on Friday in Kishtwar district, paying tribute to the “supreme sacrifice of the bravehearts” in a post on social media platform X.

The territory has been without an elected local government since 2019, when its partial autonomy was cancelled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

A total of 8.7 million people will be eligible to vote for the region’s assembly when the election begins on September 18, with results expected in October.

Ahead of the vote, Modi is expected to address rallies for his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the southern Jammu portion of the territory, which has a sizeable Hindu population.

In the past two years, more than 50 soldiers were killed in clashes, mostly in Jammu.

New Delhi accuses Pakistan of backing the region’s fighters and cross-border attacks inside its territory — claims Islamabad denies.

Indian army personnel identified as Havildar Saty Singh Bisht belonging to the Chinar corps was killed by unknown militants during operational duties in Tangdhar, Kupwara District, J&K.

Fighters in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) ambushed an army vehicle and killed five people, including three soldiers, officials said Friday, days after gunmen killed seven construction workers in the disputed territory.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan since their independence from British rule in 1947, and both claim the territory in full.

India's army confirmed a brief exchange of fire with fighters late Thursday in the vicinity of Gulmarg, near the heavily militarised unofficial border dividing IIOJK with Pakistan.

India's Chinar Corps army unit paid tribute to two slain riflemen, expressing "deepest condolences" and "solidarity with the bereaved families" in a post Friday on social media platform X.

Another soldier wounded in the attack died Friday at a military hospital.

A local government official told AFP two civilian porters engaged by the army were also killed.

The official, declining to be named because he was not authorised to speak to media, said the porters were travelling with soldiers when their vehicle was "ambushed by militants".

Their bodies were handed to their families for last rites, an AFP journalist saw.

The region's governor Manoj Sinha joined top army officers to lay floral wreaths on three coffins wrapped in the Indian national flag to pay tribute to the dead soldiers at the military headquarters in the main city of Srinagar.

"Paid homage to the brave soldiers and Defence Porters," Sinha posted on X.

India has a permanent deployment of about 500,000 soldiers in the part of IIOJK controlled by New Delhi.

Anti-India freedom fighter groups have waged an insurgency for decades, demanding independence for Kashmir or its merger with Pakistan.
